There’s something that’s massively appealing about films set in the dark underworld of British crime. From almost the entire Guy Ritchie catalogue, to Michael Caine informing us to maintain ouawah weapons in Harry Brown, there’s plenty of ground to cover in that particular genre.

But it hasn’t been prevalent as of late, now has it? Fortunately, we’ve got a new flick on the way that dips into the Bobbies versus gangsters theme that seems to be quite popular these days.

Former criminal Jacob Sternwood is forced to return to London from his Icelandic hideaway when his son is involved in a heist gone wrong. This gives detective Max Lewinsky one last chance to catch the man he has always been after. As they face off, they start to uncover a deeper conspiracy they both need to solve in order to survive.

Looks  pretty solid to me. You’ve got two dependable leads in the form of James McAvoy and Mark Strong, some slick visuals, and a story that hints at something else amidst all the gunplay.

Strong is no stranger to this genre, having made a name for himself with his infamous Archie slap in Rock ‘n Rolla, while McAvoy is trading the magic psychic button on his forehead for a 9mm pistol.

There’s no local release date for this flick yet, but Welcome to the punch does blast its way into UK cinemas next year March and stars Andrea Riseborough, David Morrissey, Peter Mullan, Elyes Gabel,Jason Flemyng, Daniel Kaluuya, Daniel Mays and Johnny Harris, with Eran Creevy writing and directing.

I could pretty much watch anything with Mark Strong in it. Everything except Green Lantern.
