After a production schedule so disastrous that even World War Z  looked over and went “DAYYYUUUUUMMMM!”, it looks like Carl Rinsch’s 47 Ronin is finally ready to be shown off to the world. And if Neo sword fighting with evil kimonos and that troll from the first Harry Potter movie (great to see he got work again) are what you’re hoping to see here today, then boy do I have a trailer for you!

From ancient Japan’s most enduring tale, the epic 3D fantasy-adventure 47 Ronin is born. Keanu Reeves leads the cast as Kai, an outcast who joins Oishi (Hiroyuki Sanada), the leader of the 47 outcast samurai. Together they seek vengeance upon the treacherous overlord who killed their master and banished their kind. To restore honor to their homeland, the warriors embark upon a quest that challenges them with a series of trials that would destroy ordinary warriors.

Hey, it’s Keanu Reeves as the chosen one! Now where have we heard that before?! Jokes and some slightly suspect CGI aside though, that actually looks like it has the potential to be pretty cool. Rinsch has apparently crafted a sort of Asian 300, only with less men, less man flesh and better swords. Depending on how over the top he plays the characters, this could turn out to be quite the adventure.

That being said, this is a totally different movie to the one that was originally planned though, as it seems to be completely revolving around Reeves now, whereas originally he was merely a supporting character. Original lead Hiroyouki Sanada now seems to have been resigned to Reeves’ Man-Friday, which is even more disappointing since I was quite impressed with him in The Wolverine and would loved to have seen him carry this movie.

Along with that trailer, four new character posters have also been released. Titled “Outcast”, “Warrior”, “Freak” and “Witch”, these are essentially much higher res versions of images that have been floating around on the net for a while.

If you recall correctly, 47 Ronin had quite the drama on set, from Rinsch (who got the gig based on strong short film work, but had never ever handled anything of this size) possibly being booted off the production for a time by Universal, to the studio forcing a 3rd act rewrite/reshoot to push Keanu Reeves’ character into a more prominent role (clearly) instead of, you know, dead in the first half.

Only time will tell if 47 Ronin can pull a World War Z and actually produce a decent film in spite of its disastrous beginnings, or whether this has just been the worlds longest and most publicized seppuku. I’m holding thumbs for the former; this world needs more movies with samurais fighting cloth-dragons.

47 Ronin will be released on December 25, 2013, because nothing says Christmas like Keanu Reeves in a kimono.

Looks cool. The battle scenes after the ronin are revealed reminds me of 13 Assassins.
