THOR: THE DARK WORLD reshoots will give Loki more screen time

Reshoots. Merely mentioning that word immediately conjures up images of a film in trouble that is desperately in need of some story restructuring. It’s something that happened to GI Joe: Retaliation, a move which delayed the film by nine months and did little to improve it.

Thor: The Dark World is having reshoots right now. But contrary to that example above, this time its for a good cause. Because we could all do with a little bit more Loki in our lives.

Hall H pledged their allegiance to the Trickster god back at Comic Con for the Thor sequel panel, a film which will most likely be the last time we see the Asgardian on the big screen. Speaking to Collider, director Alan Taylor spoke about how going back for reshoots would add more Hiddleston to the final cut of the film:

We’re literally shooting some things this week. Anthony Hopkins is back in town, we’re going to be getting some stuff from him. We continue to, what Kevin Feige calls “plus” the movie.

And that’s where Loki gets some more screentime, according to Taylor:

We’re doing full scenes, scenes that were not in the movie before. We’re adding scenes, creating scenes, writing scenes for the first time. […] We realized how well Loki was working in the movie, and we wanted to do more with him. So it was that kind of thing. It was like, ‘Oh, we could do this, we could jam this in here because he’s such a wonderful guy to watch do his stuff.’

And according to Taylor, these reshoots aren’t a sign of a troubled production, but merely an extension of material for the film:

It’s not like you screwed something up and you have to do it again. It’s additional photography because it’s, ‘oh, what if you had a scene like this? Then you could make that happen over there!

Provided that it adds to the story, I have no problem with this. More Loki most likely means more butts in seats from a certain demographic, but what the hell. Hiddleston is a damn good actor, and he clearly enjoys the role of the little brother turned bad who tried to destroy the planet after being foiled using a gigantic rainbow laser cannon to wipe out frost giants and I’m drifting again.

Thor: The Dark World will be playing it Loki from November 8.

  1. Looking forward to this one. Loki is played very well and he takes over the screen when he is in the scene, just like Khan in the latest Star Trek!
