Quite often you’ll see a trailer for a movie, and still have no idea exactly what the point of said movie actually is. And sometimes you see a trailer for a movie like The Book Thief and just instinctively know: Oscar bait. Yes, okay, so the film is not made with the sole purpose of picking up a couple of gold statues (and honestly, I don’t think it actually will), but just look at what it brings to the table: Award winning and Academy favourite lead actors, a cute newcomer child actress, a story based on an acclaimed book and, lest we forget the awards season pièce de résistance, it has Nazis.

Based on the beloved bestselling book by Markus Zusak, The Book Thief is directed by Brian Percival (“Downton Abbey”) and written by Michael Petroni (The Rite, The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys). The film tells the inspirational story of a spirited and courageous young girl named Liesel Meminger (Sophie Nélisse) who transforms the lives of everyone around her in Nazi-occupied Germany when she is sent to live with a new family and discovers the magic of books, only to share it with anyone she can.

I really, really wish that trailer didn’t have that really cheesy and out of place voice-over. It almost Disney-fies the whole thing, giving it a made-for-TV feel. Other than that, the film has a very reliable cast and certainly looks to be directed solidly enough to warrant a look. Just keep your eye on any literature you may have, in case it gets knicked.

The Book Thief will be stealing into cinemas on November 15, 2013.
