Machete don’t tweet. Machete don’t cuddle. Machete don’t eat healthy alternative food. And Machete most certainly don’t come out on top when trying to upstage Gravity on the top ten box office list.Yep, despite having a marketing campaign centered on Sofia Vergara’s double D bras, Machete Kills didn’t exactly manage to upstage Gravity this week. Holding strong, the Oscar contender added another $44.2 million to its domestic haul, where the film is currently sitting on an international pile of money that happens to be around $191.4 million thick.
Other new hopeful Captain Phillips opened up to a strong $26 million take, making someone at Sony happy after recent new releases failed to find any traction. Machete Kills bombed badly though, as it opened up in 2500 locations and barely managed to scrape in $3.79 million. That makes for one of the worst movie opening of 2013, as the original Machete still managed to make $11 million when it debuted several years ago. Here’s how everyone else did:
- Gravity – $44.2 Million
- Captain Phillips – $26 Million
- Cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2 – $14.2 Million
- Machete Kills – $3.79 Million
- Runner Runner – $3.72 Million
- Prisoners – $3.6 Million
- Insidious Chapter 2 – $2.6 Million
- Rush – $2.36 Million
- Don John – $2.34 Million
- Baggage Claim – $2 Million
Top ten departures this week include Pulling Strings and Enough Said. Rush is currently being lapped at the box office, as that F1 glory day film has barely managed to make $69 million worldwide.

No surprise about Machete really but I am saddened to hear that Rush isn’t doing too well as it looks to be a solid racing flick.
