Rumour: Three actresses testing for the role of Wonder Woman this weekend… Maybe

Well, well, well. Looks like there may just be some truth to some Wonder Woman rumours after all. Maybe. Hopefully. The initial rumour was that Thor‘s Jaimie Alexander was involved somehow, but it looks she’s off the list due to her commitment to Marvel. Schmoes Know threw out a second rumour yesterday that ex-Bond girl Olga Kurylenko was testing for the part, and it looks like this one might just have some truth to it.

Variety is reporting that according to their sources, three actresses will be testing for a major female role in Batman vs Superman this coming weekend, those three being the aforementioned Kurylenko, Gal Gadot (Fast & Furious 4-6) and Elodie Yung (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), with a possible fourth unknown actress perhaps also joining the mix.

But – and it’s big ol’ chunky but – their sources stress that while it seems likely the role, which is described as “tall, brunette, athletic and exotic”, is for that of Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman, there is a possibility that it’s actually just for Bruce Wayne’s love interest in the film.

I don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but when I read “athletic”, I don’t think “skinny”, which is unfortunately what Gadot clearly is. There’s certainly nothing wrong with her appearance, as many a young boy’s day-dreams will attest, but an Amazonian warrior princess who has been sword fighting and brawling her entire life will not be built like a runway model. Kurylenko and Yung certainly look far more physically capable, but they’re not quite right either. Did anybody see Paula Patton in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and 2 Guns? That’s athletic and exotic.

But I digress, so back to those rumours, which actually has a further addendum. According to Variety’s sources, Wonder Woman isn’t the only other superhero that will be showing up next to Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne and Henry Cavill’s Clark Kent in Batman vs Superman. Apparently several Justice League members will in fact be dropping by. Who those members are is uncertain for the most part, but Wonder Woman and Flash are supposedly locked in. Whether these will just be cameos or broader supporting roles is the question though, and one for which we currently don’t have an answer.

With Batman vs Superman‘s July 15, 2015 release date getting closer every day, and with the massive pre- and post-production work that director Zack Snyder is going to need, hopefully we’ll be getting some of those answers soon.

  1. Exactly. Athletic != skinny. Athletic == some muscular definition.

Timster said it with less tact, he does have a point. Though we have seen some strong female characters emerge in comic book movies, it’s still very much about sensuality and sass. While I’d really hope Wonder Woman resonates a lot of what we saw in Salt and Haywire, somehow catsuits and plenty of innuendo will likely be what we get.

If it isn’t Jaimie Alexander I am not interested. With all those pictures doing the rounds the other day why not?!

Was kinda hoping Warner Bros would tie the Arrow into the Batman/Superman universe somewhere down the line. Remembering what you fine folk reported awhile back with regards to The Arrow and Flash probably makes that impossible to happen now… would be cool though…
With regards to WW, hope they pick someone badass and not just pretty… never thought I’d say that… 😉

Did not Joss Whedon have a courtship with Cobie Smulders when he was working Wonder Woman?
But out of the three, I would go with Olga. She is gorgeous, got the acting chops (me thinks, thinking Hitman and her turn in Bond)

Joss’ pick originally while he was developing his screenplay was actually Charisma Carpenter, aka Cordelia Chase from Buffy and Angel. Eventually though he did say that he was thinking of Cobie Smulders as well. There’s actually very good photoshopped image of her in the WW costume floating around, and she really does look the part.

In a bit of irony, Smulders actually voices Wonder Woman in The LEGO Movie.
