You guys should all know by now how I feel about teasers for trailers (spoiler: I have more affection for ingrown toenails), but today is unfortunately a bit of a slow news day. Was it it not for the fact that America still seems to be hungover on turkey, these three teaser clips for Thursday’s first trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would have found themselves buried deep down in Extras.

As it is, you get your first glimpse of your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man sequel swinging into action today.

Sony Pictures International released the 3 clips (hence the Spanish titles), and the folks over at Comingsoon.net were kind enough to compile them all together into one 30-second clip of spidery CGI goodness.

From little we can see here, I have to say that I really, really love the new suit. Despite my misgivings about some aspects of the previous film, Andrew Garfield perfectly nailed both the Peter Parker and Spider-Man characterization, and along with this perfectly recreated costume, this is closest we’ve ever come to perfectly translating the character from comic book page to movie screen.

I’m still a bit wary in how director Marc Webb will handle the balancing act of (supposedly, at least) three villains, but I certainly can’t deny that it’s looking good. Well, from the tiny fraction we’ve seen at least.

Along with these three teasers, the film also got a new synopsis, but most tellingly also a new cast list that now no includes a few previously unmentioned names, but mysteriously no longer mentions Chris Cooper, who we know plays Norman Osborn. Could it be that his character is being held back for the later films, much like what has already been done with Shailene Woodley’s Mary Jane Watson? Cooper has already mentioned that his introduction into the franchise is going to be a bit odd, so this could have something to do with it. And if it is that Norman Osborn is indeed not showing up in this next film anymore, then that lends some serious clout to the validity of that other spoilerific leak from 2 weeks ago. The plot thickens…

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.

It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, Dane DeHaan, Campbell Scott, Embeth Davidtz, Colm Feore, Paul Giamatti and Sally Field (but no Chris Cooper) and will be webbing up cinemas on May 2, 2014.

  1. Is there a reason that Electro looks like Emperor Palpatine?
