Tis the season to be jolly, tralalalalala. With Christmas fast approaching, Disney only wanted one thing, and that’s for Frozen to emerge at number one at the North American box office. And it looks like the house of mouse got an early yuletide gift after all.

Finally toppling the three week reign of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Frozen took the top spot over the weekend. The Disney film scored a further $31.6 million, which now gives it an international haul of over $190 million so far. It may be in second place though, but Catching Fire has still done some good numbers, now sitting on a pile of cash from around the world that totals over $673 million.

Out of the furnace may have opened up in third place, but the numbers painted a different picture for this Christian Bale starring flick. Similar in tone to Killing them Softly, Out of the furnace only made a pitiful $5.3 million on debut, scoring even less than the latest Jason Statham film Homefront, which made over $6 million on opening. Here’s how everyone else did over the weekend.

  • Frozen – $31.6 Million
  • The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – $27 Million
  • Out of the furnace – $5.3 Million
  • Thor: The Dark World – $4.7 Million
  • Delivery Man – $3.7 Million
  • Homefront – $3.3 Million
  • The book thief – $2.7 Million
  • The best man holiday – $2.6 Million
  • Philomena – $2.2 Million
  • Dallas Buyers Club – $1.4 Million

Top ten departures this week include Last Vegas and The Black Nativity. The ensemble flick starring Kevin Kline and Morgan Freeman did decent business at the box office, raking in $79 million over six weeks off of a $28 million budget. The Black Nativity on the other hand, flopped badly and barely managed to make only $6.4 million over the last two weeks.
