Robert Downey Jr can’t headline the Avengers and Iron Man forvever, and will most likely depart the franchise at some point in the future. Is this a bad thing? Not entirely, as Iron Man 2 and 3 made the right move in casting Don Cheadle as his pal and fellow armoured Avenger War Machine/Iron Patriot.
I’d actually dig to see him get more of the spotlight. And it looks like the world will need a War Machine to help save the day in the Avengers sequel.
According to Hitflix, Cheadle will be joining Earth’s mightiest mortals, suiting up in his War Machine armour and will have a key role in the upcoming conflict against the rogue AI system known as Ultron. But could there be more to Cheadle’s role than meets the eye?
One thing that we have to realise, is that the Avengers is heavier on actors than it is on special effects. Downey Jr will be back as Iron Man, Mark Ruffalo will no doubt get more screen time after his Hulk stole the show and even Jeremy Renner is being given more minutes to Hawkeye things up. Balance that with two new characters in the form of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, and that’s a busy film already.
But stick to the directing style of Whedon, and one might surmise that a deadly fate awaits Rhodes in the sequel. Think about it: He’s recognisable enough to have an actual impact if he were to die in the film, but he hasn’t been built up enough to leave a void on the franchise if he does get killed off.
And chances are, we won’t even see a fourth Iron Man film until 2020, by which point we’d be in reboot territory already. Of course, I could be speculating just a tad too much. What do you think? AT any rate, I’m glad that Cheadle will have some presence in the Avengers sequel at least.
