Patrick Hughes to direct the remake of THE RAID

Action films have been lacking a certain something as of late. They’ve lost that edge, that Van Damme right bicep that adorns his movie posters, that feeling of wanting to imitate the dangerous lunacy that you see on the screen. But in 2012, one movie gave the genre the kick to the face that it needed.

That film was The Raid: Redemption, a low budget Indonesian action flick that packed more action than was scientifically possible into its 100 minute running time. This was a movie that ended sentences with exclamation points made from flying arm bars and knee to the face takedowns. So naturally, it needs a US remake. From an Expendable director.

Patrick Hughes will be sending a team of cops into a dilapidated building filled with gangsters in his English remake of Dredd 3D The Raid, once he wraps up on his current projects according to The Wrap. Hughes is currently working on the third Expendables movie, which will see Sly Stallone and his primary cast reunite for another bout of constantly running out of ammo and 30 second cameos from the past.

Brad “Out of the furnace” Ingelsby will write the script for this remake, which will retell the story of the first film. Meanwhile, Raid originale director Gareth Edwards is busy wrapping up work on the sequel to the original movie, The Raid 2: Berandal, which most critics are already claiming to be the best action movie ever made. I do not envy Hughes right now, and the size kickass shoes that he has to fill for this remake.

  1. The first one was crazy. I was surprised i never heard of this movie before so i watched it a month ago. CRAZY movie. The way its directed is so on your toes. Its a suicide mission just taken to another level. The nice part of the movie is that it doesnt rely on massive CGI effects etc etc and looks a lot more realistic where fights are concerned and setting.

I caught this back in 2012 and totally freaked out. Started messaging all my mates telling them to watch it and they all went apeshit for it as well. Great action film, can’t wait for the sequel.

Hollywood loves copying foreign countries movies. Look at the movie OLDBOY. Was released in 2013. Watched it and i was quite impressed with this movie. Then i find out that it was a re-imagining of the Korean version OLDBOY. So i watched the Korean original one and was blown even more away. The acting and the atmosphere was on a whole other level. Hollywoods one instantly looked very watered down.

Yes thats what makes this movie so hectic. The gun fights etc etc looks so real. Another scene i cant forget is when the one guy fights that malaysian fighter and dies. I didnt expect him to die but he did and the way he dies while he was being choked with that music was just cold. gave me chills.

So Hollywood gets an (E)xpendable director to helm and American version of one of the greatest action films of all time… no surprise and it’s probably gonna be shite. As you correctly point out Darryn, huge shoes to fill. Oldboy was terrible and I can see this going the same way.
    EDIT: the Oldboy remake

Ah, Harvey Weinstein. Reminds me of an episode in Entourage where James Cameron looks at him (the actor portraying) and says “Fucking Harvey.”

I didn’t get any hits when I googled it either. You sure it’s a remake or just a Korean film made for everyone?

I think it was shown at the Sundance Film Festival. It isn’t a remake, it’s new, but the American Producer wants to make it MERICAN friendly…

The original Korean one of OLDBOY is brilliant though. Have you seen it?

I have indeed, hence my comment on the remake, it was truly terrible in comparison, simply MEH on it’s own.
