When Isaac Newton got hit on the head with an Apple, he had an epiphany that resulted in his theory on Gravity, a constant force in the universe that warps time and keeps your ass planted on terra firma. But what Newton didn’t account for, was the opposing force of gravity itself, Liam Neeson.

And once again, the Neeson force has dominated at the box office.

Finally knocking The Lego Movie off of a three week spree at the top, and teaching Jesus a lesson, Liam Neeson’s mid-air action flick Non-Stop claimed the top spot this weekend with a $30 million take. It’s a good start to 2014 for Neeson, as Non-Stop is up almost $10 million in profit when compared to previous releases such as The Grey and Unknown.

Religious flick Son of God didn’t too badly either, scooping in a second place win of $26.5 million. While it may not be in the same league as Mel Gibson’s The Passion, the film still did massively better than recent genre flicks  like Courageous ($9.1 million), The Nativity Story ($7.8 million) and Fireproof ($6.8 million). Here’s how everyone else did:

  • Non-Stop – $30 Million
  • Son of God – $26.5 Million
  • The Lego Movie – $21.5 Million
  • The Monument’s Men – $5 Million
  • 3 Days to Kill – $4.9 Million
  • Robocop – $4.5 Million
  • Pompeii – $4.3 Million
  • Frozen – $3.6 Million
  • About Last Night – $3.4 Million
  • Ride Along – $3 Million

Anchorman 2 returned once again for a one week only run that packed more R-rated content into the re-release. So far, the new cut has made Paramount a quick $1.3 million haul from 1317 cinemas. Not bad. Top ten departures this week include Endless Love. The romantic film has flopped worse than non-viagra libido in the bedroom, barely clearing $28 million off of a $20 million budget since Valentines Day. Meanwhile, Frozen has managed to now make over a billion dollars at the box office. The 18th movie to do so, it’s also only the fifth movie to enter that cha-ching hall of fame without being a sequel or a remake.

It’s got nothing to do with kids. The movie looks, and according to reviews is, hilarious and charming.

Yeah bud, my youngest (10yrs old) has already booked myself and the Mrs for Lego Movie. Having seen the humour in the game titles (as he has finished them all) it really does not seem like a bad prospect.

EDIT: Disclaimer – I took him to Robocop already and I still thought it was awesome coz Robo is still cool… no matter what ppl say 😉 He was mildly entertained, sigh

Don’t worry, our grumpy James may not have liked it, but the rest of us thought it was pretty decent, so you’re not alone in your opinion.

I never said it was a bad prospect. I am just remarking that of ten movies on a list Lego is the one that has me most excited and probably the only one that will actually get me to the theater.

Edit: It may just be that time of the year that all the iffy movies are released. Post Christmas and Awards season but before the US spring break.
