You have to go after what you want in the new trailer for THE DOUBLE

The first full length trailer for The Double didn’t reveal much. Besides for the voice-over revealing the plot in metaphor, all we saw were quick scenes from the movie that made it look like a psychological thriller, and not the comedy that it supposedly is.

In this new trailer, we get to see a bit more about the plot and characters. As we know by now, Jesse Eisenberg plays Simon, a shy, quiet and vaguely creepy guy whose life is slowly taken over by James, a guy that looks exactly like him but acts like everything he’s not. We also get to properly meet the Love Interest in quirky Mia Wasikowska.

Simon is a timid man, scratching out an isolated existence in an indifferent world. He is overlooked at work, scorned by his mother, and ignored by the woman of his dreams. He feels powerless to change any of these things. The arrival of a new co-worker, James, serves to upset the balance. James is both Simon’s exact physical double and his opposite – confident, charismatic and good with women. To Simon’s horror, James slowly starts taking over his life.

It’s still feeling like a weird thriller to me, I can see moments of humour that might shine through, but overall I don’t know how witty this might turn out to be. Early buzz has praised director Richard Ayoade’s creation of a surreal, visually distinct world where Jesse Eisenberg’s dual personas are allowed to flourish. Well, one of them anyway.

Directed by Richard Ayoade, The Double also stars Mia Wasikowska, Chris O’Dowd, Wallace Shawn, Yasmin Paige, Noah Taylor, James Fox, Cathy Moriarty, Sally Hawkins, Craig Roberts and Paddy Considine.

Am I the only one getting a very Terry Gilliam vibe from this? Something about it is reminding me heavily of Brazil.
