Turtles

No matter what your age is, you’ve grown up with the Turtles in your life. From the days of cowabunga to the more modern incarnation of booyakasha, everybody knows what turtle power really is. And now it’s time for the sewer-dwellers to once again hit the big screen. Here’s the first trailer, for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The city needs heroes. Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April O’Neil (Megan Fox) and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick (Will Arnett) to save the city and unravel Shredder’s diabolical plan.

What? Labarotory experiments run amok now comprises the Turtle origin story? Rage! Rage against the Hollywood machine! First of all, I’m quite ok with that, as the alternative was to have Alien Ninja Turtles, if you recall. So this compromise more than works for me. Second of all, William Fichtner will probably be donning CGI armour for his role as the Shredder, but hot damn, that armour does look awesome. Fichtner is one of the besta ctors around today, so I’m hoping he goes crazy and eats even more scenery than his time spent as Butch Cavendish in The Lone Ranger. And thirdly, I’m really liking the look of the Turtles here.

They’re freakin’ massive, and the special effects may have just set a new benchmark. Colour me excited for this film. The heroes in a half-shell movie stars Megan Fox, Alan Ritchson, Jeremy Howard, Pete Ploszek, Noel Fisher, Will Arnett, Danny Woodburn and William Fichtner, with Jonathan Liebesman directing. It’ll be causing all kinds of shell on August 8.

Watching Black Nerd reminded me that this origin story really is just one of many. They have pretty much changed how they get mutagen with each iteration. In the current Nickelodeon series it apparently comes from milking giant space slugs.

Looks pretty cool. Just sad they put an alien in the movie.

ps. Megan Fox is the alien.

Yup, glad to see her in something big again. I guess she and Bay patched things up.

I don’t know, hey. This has lowered my already low expectations a bit. And don’t get me wrong, it’s not because I’m a TMNT purist or anything. The changes they’ve made don’t really bother me (outside of the slight irk of making Shredder a white guy), but it’s the tone and feel of it. I get the feeling that this is very much going to be like Michael Bay movies at their excessive worst, where noisy CGI chaos is prioritized over storytelling or characters.

Either that or I’m just getting grumpy in my old age.

Shredder is a white guy? That’s really disappointing. In some instances it works to change such things. Like (probably the only cool thing about Daredevil) using Michael Clarke Duncan as kingpin. But this is a bit ridiculous.

You’re getting grumpy you movie snob… this is going to be a Michael Bay film at its finest…

TMNT is not a contender for best movie 🙂

Michael Bay at his finest is The Rock and Bad Boys. I could be wrong, but this will not come close to those.

And I didn’t say I expected it would be the best movie. I can appreciate mindless escapism as much as the next guy. This just looks… kind of silly.

No, you misunderstand. I meant the whole approach they’re taking is a bit silly. It just looks devoid of any of the charm that made Turtles so cool. Looks like it’s going to be a meh CGI wankfest.

I always thought Bay’s problem is that he tries to tell overly complex stories and then compensates with CG. Anyway, he’s only producing, so the result is still open-ended.

This is going to be like The Nightmare Before Christmas where everyone thinks that Tim Burton directed it.

This is *produced* by Micheal Bay, yet because his name is attached the studio has opted to make this trailer as “MICHEAL BAY – THE GUY WHO MADE TRANSFORMERS” as they possibly can. The titles, the music and the sounds are all MICHEAL BAY.

I feel sorry for the actual director here, who will be never-know and associated to the movie – just like who ever it was that *actually* directed The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The thing with The Nightmare Before Christmas, and I suspect this, is that everything about the movie looks and feels exactly like something the producer would make. It’s as if they’re directing by proxy.

If that is the case, there will be some awesome stories about the horrid production afterwards. It may even create a good film. But Jonathan Liebesman has Wrath of the Titans and Battle Los Angeles under his belt. Neither were great, but they were competent. So this guy at least knows something about effects-heavy action-fests. And maybe he works well with Bay. I agree the trailer seems a tad iffy, but I suspect it’s the poor choice in music and the editing. I doubt either will reflect on the actual film.
