My bordering-on-obsession love for everything Brit Marling does is well documented (luckily, not yet in police case files). The actress/screenwriter first came to my and many a film fan’s attention with the amazing lo-fi science-fiction drama, Another Earth, in which she teamed up magnificently with director Mike Cahill. She’s since done work with other directors, notably Zal Batmanglij on The Sound of My Voice and The East, but I’ve been waiting for her next collaboration with Cahill, to see if they can go two for two on the sci-fi indie awesomeness.

Based on this trailer for I Origins, the new film from the pair, they are certainly going to give it a try. Boardwalk Empire‘s Michael Pitt takes the lead for this one, while Marling is just in a supporting role (though she still penned the script), but the film still deals with the same level of heady ideas, wrapped up in a love story.

Just a warning though, at around the 01:26 mark, the trailer does give away what I’ve read is a major, unexpected plot point, so watch this at your own peril.

I Origins follows a molecular biologist whose study of the human eye points to evidence with far reaching implications about our scientific and spiritual beliefs.

Admittedly, the material appears to be under threat of being preachy and self-indulgent, but festival buzz for I Origins has been exceedingly positive, indicating that Marling and Cahill have once again knocked another one out of the park.

I Origins also stars Astrid Bergés-Frisbey, Steven Yeun, Archie Panjabi, and William Mapother and will be staring into your eyes from July 18, 2014
