Looks like it’s not the Red Skull or an entire division of HYDRA that can give Captain America a run for his money, but an endangered species. Rio 2 battled with the super soldier over the weekend, but came up short as Cap stayed on top. Still, it was a decent opening for the animated sequel, banking $39 million that was identical to the debut of the original 2011 film. That total also puts it ahead of other 2014 animated movies, although don’t expect this flick to cross the billion dollar mark like Disney’s Frozen.

Oculus and Draft Day filled up the rest of the new arrivals. The horror and sports films had decent openings, with Oculus having enough of a decent start for a low budget horror. Kevin Costner’s Draft Day had a fourth place opening of $9.7 million, making this one of the lower-ranking sports movies of the past few years. Here’s how the rest of the North American box office did over the weekend:

  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier – $41.3 Million
  • Rio 2 – $39 Million
  • Oculus – $12 Million
  • Draft Day – $9.7 Million
  • Divergent – $7.5 Million
  • Noah – $7.4 Million
  • God’s Not Dead – $5.4 Million
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel – $4 Million
  • Muppets: Most Wanted – $2.1 Million
  • Mr Peabody and Sherman – $1.8 Million

Top ten departures this week include Need for Speed, Non-Stop and Sabotage. Arnie’s latest film certainly felt sabotaged, wrapping up with grand US domestic total of just over $10 million after three weeks. Need for Speed did marginally better, coming out with $185.7 million worldwide, while the Liam Neeson’s airplane thriller walked off with $184 million.

If Noah keeps this pace, it won’t have performed much better domestically than RIPD or After Earth…

I’d love to say that that won’t matter, since its already made twice its domestic totals internationally (which all add up to double its budget), but alas, we know how illogical this US-centric box-office game is.

Perhaps it won’t. All things considered, RIPD and After Earth did not bomb as badly as their reputations suggested. Noah is doing just about as well as those are, but doesn’t seem to have a ‘loser’ stink to it. Probably because everyone wondered if it would do well at all. Just shows what perception does. As long at the movie doesn’t look like a black mark, a studio might celebrate it anyway.
