Top List Thursdays – Top 20 gloriously cheesy 1980’s movie songs – Part 2

3 min read

The 1980’s was like the genesis pit of movie music cheesiness. There was so much cheese back then, that just article one would simply never be able to contain it all – never mind you guys needing a mental break from all the dairy – which is why we had to split our list of Top 20 Gloriously Cheesy 1980’s Movie Songs. You’ve seen Darryn’s 10 contributions, now break out the wine and fondue set for my big helping.

  • An Officer and a Gentleman – “Up Where We Belong” by Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes

Gentlemen, have your ever had you lady either a) tell you that she would love to see you dressed up in a white Navy uniform, or b) left your scrawny butt for a guy dressed in a whie Navy uniform? An Officer and a Gentleman, and specifically one scene of that movie where this song just destroyed the knees of every lady in the audience, is the very reason why.

  • The Karate Kid Part II – “Glory of Love” by Peter Cetera

In the history of American martial arts movies, there’s only one fighting technique cheesier (and less effective) than the crane kick, and that’s the drum punch. And a fighting move that cheesy, needs an appropriate soundtrack. So take it away, Peter Cetera!

  • Mad Max 3:  Beyond Thunderdome – “We Don’t Need Another Hero” by Tina Turner

It’s as if George Miller looked at Mad Max 3 and realized just what a step backwards it was from the vastly superior Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, so he just tried to make up for it with Tina Turner’s hair and shoulder pads. And you know what? It bloody worked!

  • Top Gun – “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin

This song, more than any other on this list, is guaranteed to get you laid like you’re a pre-Scientology, pre-couch jumping Tom Cruise.

  • Ghostbusters 2 – “On Our Own” by Bobby Brown

Look at this music video. Just look at it! And then realize that this song was no. 1 on the Billboard R&B charts, no. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and no. 4 on the UK Singles chart. Oh, 1980’s, you so crazy!

  • The Neverending Story – “The Neverending Story” by Limahl

Good luck getting this out of your head for the next week!

  • Ghostbusters – “Ghostbusters” by Ray Parker Jr.

One of the catchiest riffs, and easily coolest video for any song on this list, this song has permeated pop culture to the point where you cannot utter the question “Who you gonna call?” in public without somebody shouting back “GHOSTBUSTERS!”.

  • Beverley Hills Cop – “The Heat is On” by Glenn Frey

If there’s ever been a movie song that encapsulated its star’s infectious levity more perfectly, I have yet to find it. Plus, DAT SAXOPHONE RIFF! If this song doesn’t feature on the soundtrack of the new Beverley Hills Cop movie, I may just lose what little faith in humanity I have left.

  • Rocky – “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor

It’s a scientifically proven fact that it’s nearly impossible to listen to this song and not immediately engage in some form of physical exercise.

  • The Breakfast Club – “(Don’t You) Forget About Me” by Simple Minds

For a movie that defined a generation, you needed a song that could do the same, and in this case Scottish rock group Simple Minds delivered above and beyond. Just try not fist pumping at the end of this song. You can’t, can you? And neither should you.

  1. Eye of the Tiger has inspired me to klap the gym after work. I don’t know what that means but it sounds physical.

Agreed on almost all except Simple Minds. That song is still a classic.
