For years, the biggest question surrounding Ridley Scott’s seminal sci-fi classic Blade Runner, was whether or not lead character Deckard was a replicant like the perps it was his job to track down. Now that question has finally been replaced by another: Will Deckard actually be in the film’s sequel 12 years later? If it’s up to Alcon Entertainment, that answer would be a resounding “Yes”.

The production company acquired the rights to the franchise in 2011, and immediately began work on a previously just talked about sequel with Scott back at the helm, while original co-scribe Hampton Fancher will be teaming up with Michael Green to pen the screenplay. Alcon has now taken the abnormal step of making it public (via Variety) that they have made a formal offer to actor Harrison Ford to reprise his role as Rick Deckard, as Alcon execs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson explained:

“We believe that Hampton Fancher and Michael Green have crafted with Ridley Scott an extraordinary sequel to one of the greatest films of all time. We would be honored, and we are hopeful, that Harrison will be part of our project.”

You may have noticed all the stories we’ve done about casting offers to big name actors that we’re just rumours, and that’s because this type of thing is generally done behind closed doors. So why the full disclosure now? Well, it could be Alcon’s way of trying to reinforce the once very negative Ford’s new-found… eagerness?… acceptance? for the role.

If it works, and Ford does go for the gig, then I’m expecting a Witness sequel to be announced any day now, as clearly, with both Indiana Jones 5 and Star Wars: Episode VII on the horizon, Ford is now just dusting off one old role after the other. This role, by the way, which we’re still not clear on. With Fancher and Green’s script being kept tightly under wraps, its not certain if Ford’s Deckard will be the star again, or if, as rumoured, he would just cameo, while a new “blade runner” would lead the film.

What do you guys think? You want Ford back in the lead, or should he give some new blood a chance? Or would you even prefer it if there was no sequel being made at all?

    I’d prefer no sequel.
