PACIFIC RIM

It may have some detractors, but for the most part, I can easily drift with just about anyone when it comes to agreeing that Pacific Rim may be the finest example of giant robot on even bigger kaiju action that the big screen has seen in recent years. Despite the fact that it became a cult favourite, Pacific Rim didn’t do mega blockbuster numbers at the box office. Well fret not, because a sequel is on the way.

And  it will see the return of director Guillermo Del Toro! Universal Pictures has set a release date of April 7, 2017 for the sequel which will be shot in IMAX 3D. Even better, until that sequel arrives, an animated series will also be produced that will expand on the world of Pacific Rim, starting from the zero year of the Kaiju invasion.

This also means that Universal Pictures will be taking over distribution duties from Warner Bros, thanks to the recent Legendary split. It appears that Warner Bros has passed on their first option for a sequel then. Zak “X2” Penn will helm the script, which will have contributions from Pacific Rim 1 screenwriter Travis Beacham.

Right now though, Del Toro is working on his first English language horror, Crimson Peak. Still, a 2017 release date gives him enough room to breathe and helm the film. April should also be a far better month for a release, as Pacific Rim originally came out in a 2013 July where blockbuster fatigue had clearly set in with audiences.

You can’t see it right now, but I have the biggest grin on my face right now. Now where’s my goddamn shoe?

You aren’t entirely right. It was iffy at the U.S. box office, but it still stopped just short of half a billion dollars in total. If anything it shows Hollywood needs to stop thinking films are just for Americans.

Regardless, it’s great news. Pacific Rim shows that you can have plot holes, strange acting and outright absurdities, yet still make a masterpiece. Take that, Michael Bay!

Can they have a proper Director of Photography this time around?

I enjoyed the first one, but the lack of a sense of size and scale put me off the battle scenes, which felt like people in suits fighting in minitown. They need to use extreme depth of field and focus so that the viewer actually gets a sense that the Jeagar’s fist is like 100m away from the rest of the body etc.

When a 300m high robot is all in focus it doesn’t feel massive.
