Movies out today: aging action heroes and not a whole lot else

There are slim pickings this week as far as new releases go. Besides for The Expendables 3, we’re having another quiet-ish week. Here’s what’s on offer:

The Expendables 3

Barney, Christmas and the rest of the team come face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (played by Mel Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Dun dun duuuuuun! Blah blah blah new team, something something fight to the death, et cetera.

I can almost guarantee that if there is a plot between the explosions and one-liners, it’s being incomprehensively mumbled by Sylvester Stallone and you pretty much don’t care anyway. You’re there for the explosions and one-liners, so don’t let the 31% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes stop you. It’s The Expendables 3, what more can you want?

Jersey Boys

Clint Eastwood’s big screen adaptation of the award-winning musical of the same name, Jersey Boys tells the story of the four young men from the wrong side of the tracks in New Jersey who came together to form the iconic `60s rock group The Four Seasons.

Accompanied by “the hits that inspired a generation”, Jersey Boys is a must for fans of the musical, but critics have found the non-musical parts frustrating, heavy-handed and over-all clichéd, with only the electric atmosphere of the soundtrack to keep it from falling apart completely.

Between Friends

First on the list of South African releases today is the romantic comedy Between Friends. After 7 years, college friends reunite at an up-market Game Lodge in South Africa. Long buried secrets shared by old friends are eventually exposed, causing tensions to arise in current relationships.

I’ll be honest, I saw the trailer for this a few weeks ago and I legitimately had no idea what the plot was, so I’d have no idea what to expect from the film, but at least it’s not another South African film dedicated to the more violent side of our country. Critics have called Between Friends light-hearted and stylish. Expect something along the lines of a Tyler Perry movie.

Born to Win

The second of our local films this week is Born to Win, which was based on the true story of Leon Terblanche, who found himself confronted with the question: “Where is God?” This sets him on a journey of discovering that he has never been alone—through all the hurt and brokenness of his past. He learns that, no matter how broken he is, God is always his only hope. The question is not, “Does God speak?” The question is, “Are you listening?”

Ahem. Not much more to say about that then is there. And I can’t find any reviews of it, or much news, so I guess that’s all you get.
