Is the final Rambo movie titled RAMBO: LAST BLOOD?

Tie your red bandanas and lace up your boots again, it looks like it’s finally time to head back into the jungle/desert/rural town/[INSERT HORRIBLE ENVIRONMENT OF CHOICE HERE] with Sylvester Stallone’s John Rambo for one last hurrah. One that will probably be bloody.

Stallone was last seen on screen as the titular one-man army in 2008’s Rambo, which he also wrote and directed. The incredibly violent affair (damn, that .50 cal machine gun) was quite the success, bringing in $118 million worldwide off just a $50 million budget. And while Sly initially stated that he was done with the character, he soon warmed up to the idea of one last film to truly (as rumoured over the year), put the character to rest. And now we may just know what the title of this last adventure will be.

ComingSoon.net are reporting that one of their readers has provided them with intel that the next film will actually be titled Rambo: Last Blood, which of course is a play on First Blood, the title of the first film in the franchise. The intel also confirms that Stallone will be directing this final effort as well. Now CS are usually not ones to dabble in rumours, which leads me to believe that they must have something here if they’re willing to publish it.

This of course follows on from the news in June that Splendid Film have bought the rights to a fifth film. The production company released this statement at the time (translated from German):,

“With ‘Rambo V’ Sylvester Stallone returns in his iconic role. This time he goes up against a Mexican cartel. Stallone, who has also written the screenplay, describes the new Rambo as his version of ‘No Country for Old Men.’ Like the last film, ‘Rambo V’ is produced by Avi Lerner (“The Expendables 1-3”)

As to what Last Blood will actually be about, well, we have no idea really. Over the years we’ve heard ideas ranging from the straightforward “Rambo fights his way through a Mexican cartel to rescue a kidnapped girl” to the script that Stallone was working on in 2009, which was actually an adaptation of the James Byron Huggins’ novel “Hunter”. Check out the synopsis for that draft that made its way online, to see why it was very un-Rambo-like.

John Rambo could track anyone – or anything – on earth. Now the military desperately needs him for a mission that his ultrasensitive instincts tell him he should refuse. A beast is loose somewhere north of the Artic Circle. It has already decimated a secret research facility and annihilated a squad of elite military guards. And the raging creature is headed south toward civilization, ready to wreak bloody devastation.

It’s a job that Rambo and his 22-year-old hunting partner, Beau Brady, can’t turn down, but they and a team of highly-skilled special forces kill team discover that the prey is a terror beyond their wildest imagination – a half-human abomination created by a renegade agency through a series of outlawed genetic experiments. It has man’s cunning, a predator’s savageness, and a prehistoric power that has transcended the ages. And even if Rambo and Beau survive its unrelenting hunger for human blood, they’ll still have to confront the grim reality that it may have grown immortal.

Rambo vs genetically engineered monsters? Huh?!

Whatever ida Sly and co go with, I can only hope that they don’t follow the path of Stallone’s The Expendables 3 and neuter the film to get a PG-13 rating. I would say that Rambo was unflinchingly violent, but the violence was so hard hitting that you just had to flinch. Repeatedly. That dark, violent tone was actually one of the most appealing things about the movie, so I’m hoping that The Expendables 3’s box-office dud taught them that trying to appeal to a younger audience who don’t have the built-in affinity for the character that long time fans do, may not be the way to do things.
