Technically, if you’re going to dress up as a bat and fight crime, you’re going to need more than just gadgets, muscles and cool cars to get you through a night. You’re going to need to channel some anger out of your ulcers, and into your fists when you hit the streets of Gotham. And that’s an idea that Batman is more than familiar with. Anger is a tool that gets the job done, and it’s also something that the latest caped crusader identifies with.

While speaking to The Sunday Times (Not our one), Affleck made a note of how anger management had always played a key role in Batman movies:

I think it’s a necessity, historically, in the tradition of these films.

And you can trace that back to the very first Batman movie, as the Michael Keaton incarnation had a simmering anger underneath all that rubber, that finally exploded when he beat the Joker around a church like a red-headed stepchild. Christian Bale’s Batman also had an angrier approach to fighting crime, and delving into that darker side of the character was something that Affleck recognised in himself for Batman V Superman: Analyse This:

For me, anger is so deeply buried and contained that when it does kind of come out, it comes out in stronger bursts.  I tend to be respectful, polite, get along, put up with, put up with, put up with … then, when it finally emerges, it’s not something I have a ton of control over.  I’m not gonna go into a Wolverine berserker rage, but I do have a, I do … That is an interesting thing that you point out.  That’s my personality … By the way, that’s a character flaw, I think.  I should sit down and say, ‘Listen, I just want to let you know what happened there wasn’t OK’, instead of going, let it go, let it go, let it go … ‘Ah, that’s not a big deal’, until finally you just pop!

Hopefully this won’t manifest itself in intimidating throat cancer when confronting criminals then. Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice will be getting angry on March 25, 2016.
