Prepare for a redesigned Ghostface in MTV's SCREAM

Easily stabbed horny teens are a dime a dozen. Hell, horrible blunt force trauma and stab wounds are the third leading cause of death amongst teen sin the US of A, just behind various lakeside STDs and Final Destination sequels. What made Scream stabd out from the myriad of such similar movies when it first arrived, wasn’t just a sense of irony however. It was an iconic killer, with just about every kid in your neighborhood dressing up as Ghostface for a killer costume party after the film hit. But in MTV’s Scream TV series, expect the familiar spectre to have a brand new look.

Scream Ghostface

According to MTV vice executive president Mina Lefevre, the masks they are a’changin’. While Scream will have the same attitude of the original films according to dubious marketing, it’ll be getting a cosmetic upgrade as Lefevre explained to Collider:

Scream was incredibly iconic, but we wanted to reinvent that for TV while of course keeping all the main elements that made it so iconic, including a mask, but also the soapy teen stories, pop culture humor, the scares and the killer. We’re tonally walking that line, yet delivering the scares in a significant way. The mask was a big discussion creatively. We wanted to get a nod and a wink to what the original was, but we definitely wanted to make it more on par with what horror is now, which is darker.

Okay, benefit of the doubt. Maybe a new design on Ghostface can help reignite the show. Or in this case, call him Fleshface:

It’s a darker, almost more grounded, evolved version of the mask. It’s something we’re constantly talking about. How did that mask become that mask? What’s its purpose? How did it evolve? If the Scream movie mask was the more plastic version, for a lack of a better description, this one is a more organic looking and frankly darker version.

According to Lefevre, the original mask could pop up. Most likely as an over-used Halloween accessory, I’d guess:

It’s a little preliminary, obviously because we haven’t even started our writers room, to say that we will never see that other mask or not.

Well alright then. That’s going to have a few purists going nuts. Other details on the show are scant right now, but at least it has done some casting. Scream will star Willa Fitzgerald as the popular yet shy intellectual Emma, Bex Taylor-Klaus as artsy lone wolf Audrey, John Karna as computer wizard Noah, Carlson Young as mega popular prom queen to be Brooke and Amadeus Serafini as the enigmatic new kid in town Kieran.

I don’t know if it’s necessary to redesign Ghostface. I dig the original mask and costume. It’s remarkably effective still, even after being taken through the ringer in several parody movies. And by trying to create a new Ghostface, MTV may just make us yearn for the old slasher instead.
