Midweek Movie Mouth-Off: Gone before their time

Yesterday we saw the news that the fate of NBC’s Constantine is hanging by a thread. Currently, it’s not been cancelled, but is “on hiatus” until more ratings have come in and NBC can see if it’s worth producing a second season.

I’ll freely admit that I am very quick to judge with new TV shows. If the story, characters or even just the general universe hasn’t grabbed me by three episodes in, I’m out. But I haven’t even had a chance to watch Constantine and already it might be another Firefly – which is of course the most famous example of a show that was cancelled too early.

There have been a lot of shows that have gone the Firefly route, some sadly didn’t even get a movie to finish them off. The one that most irks me was Flash Forward. I don’t know a lot of people that watched it, which is part of the problem I guess, but I really enjoyed it. The acting was solid, the premise was good, the story was fascinating and… it ended up being canned. And on one hell of a cliff-hanger ending as well, those jerks. Now I’ll never know what happened!

What else do you think was cancelled too soon?

AH, FlashForward killed me! Especially as they clearly had a plan going forward! I NEED TO KNOW!

Rubicon. It was like the anti-24 when it came to espionage thrillers and it was perfect. What pissed me off the most though when the show was canned, was that the creators filmed two different season finales, one that wraps everything up – just in case they were canned – and another that left things open-ended – in case they got renewed for a second season.
And just days before the finale, AMC was talking about how well the buzz for the show had picked up and that things were looking good, so they aired the open-ended finale. And then AMC cancelled it anyway so we never got any resolution! Argh!!

I’m almost ashamed to admit it but I really enjoyed Surface. NBC pulled it after a season as well. I despise NBC for the way they continually shaft viewers who have invested time in their shows only to get the finger in the off season.

Well then I’m ashamed right there with you. I really dug what little bit of Surface we had. Really wanted to know the deal with the monsters and that one seemingly ageless Asian guy.
