Forget the introductory words I normally throw up here. Background stories and pithy jokes about Darryn are just going to get in the way of what you’re really here for. So ladies and gentlemen and Darryn (okay, just one joke), without further ado, I give you the first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens!

Internet, you have my permission to break now.

In typical JJ Abrams fashion, there’s very, very little in the way of story given away in this trailer. The most persistent rumour thus far has been that this movie will be about the search for Luke Skywalker who has been in self-imposed exile for the last 30 years. There’s nothing here that contradicts that, in fact there are a few snippets – like John Boyega’s character being a Stormtrooper, Daisy Ridley’s character living on a desert planet, Oscar Isaac as the X-Wing pilot, the man villain having a cross-hilt lightsaber (how freaking cool is that?!) – that actually corroborate some of the more spoilery elements of that rumour. I won’t repeat them here for people who want to go into the movie as fresh as possible, but if you’re okay with knowing details that are looking more solid by the minute, then you can read about it HERE and HERE.

One thing I have to mention about the trailer though, is just how dark and ominous it is. Sure there are some fist-pump worthy moments at the end, like the X-Wing squadron skirting that lake or the Millennium Falcon pulling a desert-skimming split-s in the face of some TIE Fighters, but for the most part its pretty grim stuff. And personally, I couldn’t be happier about that.

Co-writer/director JJ Abrams has a crazy amount of pressure on him to this movie to perform, not just to live up to the original trilogy but to also help right the wrongs of the prequel trilogy. And if you ask me, this first step, while pretty small in the grand scheme of things, has been a very sound one thus far.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens also stars Harrison Ford, Andy Serkis, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Max von Sydow, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyong’o, Crystal Clarke, Pip Anderson, Christina Chong and Miltos Yerolemo. It is scheduled for release on December 18, 2015.

I really like it actually. Sure we are very used to the single and double blade designs and that’s pretty much what’s always been around. But a little bit of a new design could make LS duels a little more interesting
