Jason Statham is a simple man. That’s no hit on his intelligence, but rather his acting niche. You have a movie where some morally reprehensible person with a dubious goatee is being a big old meanie to somebody (mostly cute kids, spunky teens or attractive middle-aged women) and you need their foreheads to be violently introduced to the business end of size-9 boot, then Statham is your man. Skop, skiet skop some more en donner in every sense of the word, with no need for a deep narrative or layered characterization.

And that’s exactly what you’re getting with Wild Card (also known as Joker in Europe), a new action flick that sees Statham teaming up again with his Expendables 2 director Simon West, who also helmed’s Statham’s remake of the Charles Bronson flick The Mechanic. Clearly Statham and West have a thing for remaking old movies that starred hard men with enviable moustaches as Wild Card  actually a remake of the 1986 Burt Reynolds actioner Heat (not to be confused with Brian De Palma’s Heat which is totally unrelated) which was actually based off a novel by William Goldman who has now penned the script for this new version.

And honestly, if this trailer is anything to go by, that last sentence is actually more complex than the plot for this movie appears to be, which is frankly just how we like our Statham flicks around here. West has had a bit of a hit-and-miss career. I still have lots of stupid love for aforementioned The Expendables 2 and Con-Air (his directing debut), but I found The Mechanic to just be okay, while Stolen was a complete slog, although that may have been the Nic Cage factor. Right now, Wild Card looks like it could swing either way, so let’s hope this trailer isn’t the full picture on what to expect.

Wild Card also stars Stanley Tucci, Sofía Vergara, Milo Ventimiglia, Michael Angarano and Anne Heche. The movie opens in the US on December 14, 2014, but we’ll have to endure a crazy long wait until August 28, 2015 for a local release.

  1. i think this was the film De Palma was originally meant to make before West took over. And I can’t help thinking De Palma would’ve done a far better job of it as this just looks like the standard Statham Kick People Alot Of Times stuff. Not that there’s anything wrong with that but, De Palma has style to spare and he would’ve kicked this material up a notch.

Also, there’s another small film called Heat that stars De Niro and Pacino 🙂

I’d never have guessed from this trailer that Da Palma was once involved at all. Now I’m wondering if the trailer is over-playing the action elements…

Jason Statham is the new Steven Seagal, but without the douchbaggery or constantly awful films.

Was I the only one who hoped the guy going through the window would hit the stripper pole?
