And what a journey it’s been! We’re there and back again…

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves.  Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.  As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide – unite or be destroyed.

The darkest of the trilogy, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies has it all. Jaw-dropping battle sequences, sumptuously detailed scenes and stellar acting. Let’s face it, this is the new release you’ve been waiting for all week, and in addition to Kervyn’s review, there’s not much more I can say to convince you. You’ve probably already pre-booked your tickets!

Love Is Strange

Previously out on Cinema Nouveau, Love is Strange is now in cinemas country-wide.

After nearly four decades together, Ben (John Lithgow) and George (Alfred Molina) finally tie the knot in an idyllic wedding ceremony in lower Manhattan. But when George loses his job soon after, the couple must sell their apartment and – victims of the relentless New York City real estate market – temporarily live apart until they can find an affordable new home. While struggling with the pain of separation, Ben and George are further challenged by the intergenerational tensions and capricious family dynamics of their new living arrangements.

With excellent performances by Lithgow and Molina, critics are raving about Love Is Strange. It’s artsy, it’s poignant, it’s bittersweet and authentic, it’s the kind of movie that critics would rave about anyway. Clearing 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, if you feel like bawling your eyes out over a modern love story, then this might be your movie this weekend.

Love, Rosie

Since the moment they met at age 5, Rosie (Lily Collins) and Alex (Sam Claflin) have been best friends, facing the highs and lows of growing up side by side. A fleeting shared moment, one missed opportunity, and the decisions that follow send their lives in completely different directions. As each navigates the complexities of life, love, and everything in between, they always find their way back to each other – but is it just friendship, or something more?

Love, Rosie is based on the novel Where Rainbows End by Cecilia Ahern, the same scribe behind P.S. I Love You. And if you saw that, you kind of know what to expect. It’s pure chick-lit escapism brought to the big screen, a typical will-they-won’t-they comedy of errors with undoubtedly a happy ending. And if you think that’s a spoiler, you’ve obviously never seen a rom-com before!

Walking on Sunshine

walking on sunshine

Set to the greatest hits of the 80s, this film tells the story of how, after a whirlwind romance, Maddie, fresh from a long-term relationship, is preparing to marry gorgeous Raf, and has invited her sister, Taylor, to the wedding in Italy. What Maddie doesn’t know, however, is that Raf is a former holiday flame of Taylor’s, and Taylor thinks Raf is the love of her life. That’s just one of the setbacks on the road to happy ever after!

Oh gosh that already sounds confusing! Well, I guess if Love is Strange sounds too serious, and Love, Rosie didn’t have enough Eighties music to satisfy your needs, then Walking on Sunshine will fit your oddly-specific criteria. It’s unsubtle, cheesy and, for the most part it’s fun, which I guess describes the Eighties quite succinctly as well.
