It’s Friday the 13th and boys, you are unlucky today. See, we have Kingsman: The Secret Service – which you have to see – releasing at the same time as Fifty Shades of Grey – which you’ve probably been told you are going to see. Here’s my solution: go for a barter deal, you’ll take her to Fifty Shades (and you’ll probably get lucky that night) if she sits through Kingsman for you (pass it off as a ‘rom-com’, it’s got Colin Firth so that makes it plausible). Fair’s fair!

Kingsman: The Secret Service

Based upon the acclaimed comic book and directed by Matthew Vaughn (KICK ASS, X-MEN FIRST CLASS), KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE tells the story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.

I can’t overstate how excited I am for this movie! Kervyn’s 4.5/5 stars has me super amped to go watch this gleefully silly, surprisingly funny, action packed over-the-top comic-book spectacle. And if you need any more endorsement, Kervyn’s already booked tickets to go watch it again at IMAX.

Fifty Shades of Grey

Fifty-Shades-Of-Grey

E.L. James’ kinky best-seller finally gets the big screen treatment. The steamy tale details a masochistic relationship between a literature student Anastasia and the handsome but tormented billionaire businessman Christian Grey, whose desires for extreme intimacy pen from secrets in his past.

Besides for ending up being completely boring, colourless and oddly conservative considering the source material, the entire Fifty Shades of Grey franchise does not promote the idea of a safe and healthy BDSM lifestyle and is, in my opinion, dangerously misleading. If you can avoid it, you should.

Still Alice

Alice Howland, happily married with three grown children, is a renowned linguistics professor who starts to forget words. When she receives a diagnosis of Early-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease, Alice and her family find their bonds thoroughly tested. STILL ALICE follows her struggle to stay connected to who she once was.

Still Alice doesn’t cover a very easy topic, and it’s heart-breaking, raw, and difficult to watch. That being said, Julianne Moore’s brilliant, nuanced and poignant performance makes it all the more worth-while – a performance for which she has netted her fifth Oscar nomination. Hopefully this time she takes home the statuette.

Romeo and Juliet

ROMEO AND JULIET is a modern Broadway adaptation of the timeless classic. Jealousy, prejudice, betrayal and the chance that true love will conquer all, this could only be the greatest love story ever told.

Well, it’s Romeo and Juliet, you know what to expect from the story. Even if it’s not as inventive as Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, this big-screen showing of the Broadway production still hits all the right notes, and the cast (including Orlando Bloom and Tony nominated Condola Rashad) are perfect in their roles. For a decent Valentine’s Day movie, you can’t go wrong with a classic.

Are You Here

When his off-the-grid best buddy Ben Baker (Zach Galifianakis) inherits his estranged father’s fortune, womanizing local weatherman Steve Dallas (Owen Wilson) joins forces with him to battle the legal challenge brought by Ben’s formidable sister (Amy Poehler), in the hilarious big-screen directorial debut from “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner.

Well, I don’t know how “hilarious” this big screen debut for Matthew Weiner is, considering most critics are completely slating Are You Here. It’s awkward, careless and tonally all over the place, the perfect storm of a comedy without the humour squashed into a drama that doesn’t take itself seriously.
