Promoted to series regulars in the currently airing season 2 of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (AoS), Adrianne Palicki aka Bobby Morse aka Mockingbird and Nick Blood aka the only cool Nick aka the free-wheeling Lance Hunter have been tasked with leading a potential spin-off series on home network ABC. AoS’ executive producer Jeremy Bell and writer Paul Zbyszewski are developing the project as per THR. This is not to be confused with another Marvel/ABC project being developed by John Ridley (12 Years a Slave, American Crime) that is said to be a reinvention of an existing superhero.

While in the comics Mockingbird is usually linked with Hawkeye, played by Jeremy Renner on the movie side of the Marvel-verse, the series has Morse and Hunter as an on-again off-again ex-husband and wife; with all the relationship drama, fallout and sarcastic comments that entails. Mockingbird has always seemed to me a touch underutilised but I’ll be sad to see her leaving AoS; and while Hunter was initially quite irritating when first introduced his character’s grown over the season and also provides some of the better moments of comic relief. Whether their relationship dynamic, which has been best in small doses, can survive without becoming too soap opera-y in a spin-off remains to be seen.

With events in the series coming to a head very shortly I’ve seen a fair bit of speculation surrounding the direction the spin-off will take, with Secret Avengers and Avengers Academy being the most popular theories. It got off to an admittedly rocky start but I’m thoroughly enjoying AoS. I’m not really sold on the idea of a spin-off series just yet though, especially if it’s very similar in tone to AoS; which is something Arrow and The Flash avoid on the DC side of TV.

  1. Only recently started watching AoS and not really a massive fan. My missus enjoys it considerably more than I do. It just isn’t very.. I don’t know.. MARVELous. Hehehehe. Nah in all seriousness it just doesn’t have what the marvel movies have. That something that makes it awesome and hilariously stupid at the same time. I don’t know. Maybe I’m just spoilt by all the awesome avengers build up. 😀

The first half or so of season 1 isn’t great, moves quite slowly. But once you get to the point where it linked with the events in Captain America Winter Soldier it really picks up steam. Plus the earlier stuff lays a lot of groundwork that only pays off much later.

Yeah I think that is what I felt when I was watching it. But by the time the link up happened they had already lost me. Perhaps I should sit down and watch it again. Although I just ask my missus what is going on and she tells me and I can watch the odd episode now and again. Doesn’t feel like I’m missing anything. I don’t know.

        Conflicted.

I also though it was boring at first, but then the linking with the movies just made me love the show
