I think we all enjoy our sleep. Maybe some of us enjoy it too much, and can’t get up every now and then. Which may mean that you could have sleep paralysis. Which may also mean that bedtime demons are coming for your soul. I think.

That’s pretty much the horrifying idea behind Rodney “Room 237” Ascher’s latest documentary,The Nightmare. Check the trailer for it below:

THE NIGHTMARE’S subjects hail from different backgrounds and walks of life, but share eerily similar visions of malevolent, near-human beings that grow increasingly aggressive the longer the sleep paralysis recurs. Are these just random hallucinations or something more? Rational explanations get challenged by the similarities of the “shadow people” multiple subjects describe looming over them. Ascher, who has first hand knowledge of sleep paralysis, brings the full intensity of this experience to the screen while maintaining empathy and respect for his subjects. As the film unfolds, distinctions between the documentary and horror genres fade as do easy lines between reality and the imagination.

The Nightmare got some rave reviews when it did the indie circuit at SXSW already, with most critics feeling that the focus on more personal stories made the doccie stand out as a solid horror film more than a scientific movie that examines sleep paralysis. It really is the stuff of nightmares then, for anyone suffers from the condition.

The Nightmare will be keeping you awake forever from June 5 when it hits video on demand.
