Normally, the only box office disasters that we hear about involve films that fail to break a certain margin when it comes to numbers, not landscapes. But at least one disaster flick has managed to not only pull in the crowds, but prove that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson can still lead a tentpole USA summer movie.

After last year’s disappointing (in more ways than one) debut of Brett Ratner’s Hercules, Johnson helped lead a film outside of the Furious franchise, with San Andreas hitting a $52.3 million opening on the Hollywood Richter scale. Meanwhle, Cameron Crowe’s latest film Aloha failed to get any traction, with that flick making a mere $10 million from 2815 locations in North America. Here’s a look at the rest of the box office estimates.

  • San Andreas – $52.3 Million
  • Pitch Perfect 2 – $14.3 Million
  • Tomorrowland – $13.8 Million
  • Mad Max: Fury Road – $13.6 Million
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron – $10.9 Million
  • Aloha – $10 Million
  • Poltergeist – $7.8 Million
  • Far From The Maddening Crowd – $1.4 Million
  • Hot Pursuit – $1.3 Million
  • Home – $1.1 Million

Top ten departures this week include Furious 7 and Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2. The latest Kevin James comedy finally dropped off the top ten after seven weeks, pulling in over $100.7 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. That’s a damn good result, but far off from the original film which made over $183 million in 2009. Hopefully this will be the nail in that coffin.

As for Furious 7, the road has led to a rather profitable haul of over $1.5 billion over nine weeks. Director James Wan and his ensemble cast hit all the right notes, with the box office profits being split between the USA’s $349 million and international totals of over $1.157 billion. The biggest contributor? China of course, where box office results there eclipsed the USA, as the film pulled in over $389 million. I have a feeling that Furious 8 will be hitting those shores for location shoots, pretty soon.
