In case you missed the fantastic news, Mad Max: Fury Road is back on IMAX for another week, starting today! So if you were like me and you totally missed the boat, you’ve got until next week Thursday (11 June) to catch it on the BIG big screen. For those of you that have already seen it though, here’s what else is out this week for you to enjoy:

Spy
Susan Cooper is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency’s most dangerous missions. But when her partner falls off the grid and another top agent is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global disaster.
Though not without it’s problems, Spy is a whirlwind parody of the spy genre, with great characters and performances, lots of swearing and perfectly timed gags. If you’re thinking “urgh, another Melissa McCarthy movie” (yes Darryn, we can hear you thinking) then just bear in mind that Kervyn rated it 4/5, so it might surprise you.

The Guest
A soldier introduces himself to the Peterson family, claiming to be a friend of the son, who died in action. After the young man is welcomed into their home, a series of accidental deaths seem to be connected to his presence.
The Guest might not be groundbreaking in terms of its originality, but it’s still thrilling and engaging. While it borrows from similar movies, it does so with fresh eyes, and while it might be predictable, you’ll still be immensely entertained and enthralled, wondering how they’ll pull the next expected plot twist off. Nick certainly loved it, handing out a 4.5/5 star review.

Very Good Girls
Best friends Lily and Gerry, home for one last New York summer, make a pact to lose their virginity before leaving for college. But when they both fall for the same handsome artist and Lily starts seeing him in secret, a lifelong friendship is tested.
Despite great performances from the female leads, Very Good Girls hasn’t managed to strike the right cords. What could have been a bittersweet coming-of-age drama just ended up being a dated, boring mess of clichés with very little insight or entertainment. Only scraping together 19% on Rotten Tomatoes, Very Good Girls is disappointing and rather fake.

Song One
After Franny’s musician brother Henry is injured and hospitalized in a coma following a car accident, Franny returns home after a long estrangement and begins to use his notebook as a guide to how his life has evolved in her absence. Franny seeks out the musicians and artists Henry loved, in the course of her journey meeting James Forester, his musical idol, whose success and fame belie a shy and private man. As a strong romantic connection develops between Franny and James, the question becomes if love can bloom even under the most adverse circumstances.
Blegh, I gagged a little while reading that blurb, it sounds so trite. I know weepy, melodramatic romance movies aren’t my thing but still, yuck. Song One might hit the right notes on the music front, but everything else about it is self-absorbed and kind of shallow, and only worthy of 36% on Rotten Tomatoes.
