FANTASTIC FOUR director implies that studio meddling ruined his movie!

So I watched Fantastic Four last night. Thanks to media embargoes, you’re going to have to wait until next week to read my full review, but I will give you a little teaser: I really liked some stuff and really didn’t like some other stuff. Now that might not be much of a revelation, seeing as how most of us tend to feel that way about the majority of movies. But with Fantastic Four the difference in quality, tone and thematic realization between the good stuff and the bad is so vast and dramatically jarring that you would swear you’re watching two different movies made by two completely separate entities. And that’s because it apparently was.

As the movie hits US cinema screens today on the backs of an overwhelmingly negative critical drubbing, director Josh Trank took to Twitter to seemingly distance himself from the movie we saw, implying that Fox meddled with his cut of the film to produce the uneven mess we have now. He then backpedalled and deleted the tweet almost immediately, but the internet always remembers! (via Variety)

And you know what? I completely and utterly believe him. The portions that I enjoyed feel exactly like the type of movie that would come from the guy who made the great Chronicle. They’re not perfect, by a long shot, but imply the existence of a solid, entertaining flick that would certainly have washed out the crappy taste of the previous two Fantastic Four films. Guess we’re going to have to live with that crappiness even longer though.

Fantastic Four opens locally next week on Friday 14 August.

Remember before when they were talking about how this could exist in the same Fox universe as X-Men, they’re not saying that anymore either.

I dunno……. 9% on rotten tomatoes? This seems a bit dodgy to me. Im gonna slip on my tinfoil hat here and suspect that there is something else going on, like the way the Russians organised themselves to give Company of Heroes 2 a bad rating because they were offended by its content.

I just dont believe it could actually be that low unless there are other agendas at play. Maybe People think the rights will go to Marvel if this turns out bad. Maybe its Marvel themselves trying to do it.

I’ll watch the movie myself to judge

Reading on other reviews, some people are not a fan of the difference in tone that Trank uses – for the most part, this doesn’t play out like a superhero movie one bit, and I really dug that.

From the trailers and the comments from the director/cast it was pretty obvious that it was going for a “different” vibe, so it surely wasnt a surprise so if thats the reason they disliked it then thats just being petty.

That said though, i watched a review on youtube (chris stukkman or something i cant remember) where he mentions that the special effects are terrible, the cast has no chemistry, and the shared universe aspects seem forced and drown out everything else.

Still, I thought The Amazing Spiderman 2 and The Lone Ranger didnt deserve that hate that it got so im still optimistic about this one.

        I’ll wait for your review…

There are some really interesting elements, can’t go into details because of embargo but the tone shifts like a Microsoft 180 presentation. It jars you like Jar Jar Binks 0_O

It was literally like watching a movie directed by two people… Very frustrating.

Never looked forward to this. But Screenjunkies also mentioned it being not good, so I will wait to rent it for R10 at the shop.
