Suicide Squad (33)

Yes, the forehead tattoos and Bond villain-like grill is a bit much, but I’ll be damned if I’m not really excited to see Oscar-winner Jared Leto’s take on the Joker in writer/director David Ayer’s upcoming Suicide Squad. There have been several different incarnations of the Joker since he first made his screen debut – Cesar Romano’s goofy cheeseball, Jack Nicholson’s cackling gangster and of course Heath Ledger’s unhinged anarchist. And based on the snippet we’ve seen of Leto’s Joker in the first Suicide Squad trailer, we’re getting something different again this time around: a just plain scary f$%&ing psycho!

One person who should know all about that is actress Margot Robbie, who plays Harley Quinn, a loony villain who actually started out as the Joker’s psychiatrist before he completely twisted her to his crazy way of life through a very damaged relationship. Because of that, Robbie has obviously spent lots of time working together with the intense Leto, who is known for going full method acting,  and she spoke to New York Daily News about the unnerving experience.

“What he’s doing with the character is so cool. At first it was kind of confronting (to be up close) but now I’m so used to it, I think if I ever saw him out of makeup now I would be really confused. Actually, I saw him out of makeup once and I was actually petrified of him. I was too scared to go up and didn’t know who that person was, and when he got back into his makeup I was far more comfortable.”

But while Robbie thinks that Leto’s Joker is “pretty impressive,” she went on to explain that that’s not the only major drawcard for the movie, which sees the government forcing a team of incarcerated villains into becoming their disposable attack squad.

“I guess the one common denominator is we’re all bad guys, it just makes everything more fun that way. The scenes are more interesting I feel, when you just don’t know how the characters are going to react, especially with Harley, who’s absolutely nuts… she’s either going to kill you or laugh and give you a hug.”

Suicide Squad is Robbie’s first foray into the world of comic book movies, and she appears to be the absolute perfect fit for Harley Quinn. She come close to being in a different comic book team thoug: The Fantastic Four. Luckily for her though, she didn’t caught up in Fox’s absolutely disastrous reboot of the superhero franchise.

“I didn’t really resonate with the script, and I haven’t seen the movie, so I don’t really know how it turned out different from the page. But I had a great meeting with the director (Josh Trank) and I really enjoyed that.

“I guess it’s part of the game: Sometime you win some, sometimes you lose some.”

I think it’s pretty safe to say that she can count her dodging of that movie as a win.

Suicide Squad also stars Will Smith as Deadshot, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Jay Hernandez as El DIablo, Adam Beach as Slipknot, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. It is scheduled for release on August 5, 2016.
