For a third weekend in a row, Straight Outta Compton was ready to hold the top spot. While August saw the usual dip in ticket sales, Straight Outta Compton saw very little resistance on the way towards number one, beating newcomers such as War Room and No Escape.

Overall, it was a weekend, with the top twelve of the North American box office making a combined total of $68.8 million, 22% down from last year’s $88.2 million weekend of the same time-frame. In fact, the August 28-30 weekend is the lowest-grossing weekend of the year so far.

Here’s a look at how the top ten did in the US then:

  • Straight Outta Compton – $13.2 Million
  • War Room – $11 Million
  • Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation – $8.3 Million
  • No Escape – $8.2 Million
  • Sinister 2 – $4.6 Million
  • The Man From UNCLE – $4.4 Million
  • Hitman: Agent 47 – $3.8 Million
  • The Gift – $3.13 Million
  • Jurassic World – $3.12 Million
  • Ant-Man – $3 Million

It’s not all gloom and doom however. Continuing the news that Terminator: Genisys was saved from failure by the mighty Chinese box office, it looks like the Arnie-sequel is doing even better now. A second top spot weekend in China saw Terminator: Genisys rake in another win in foreign territories.

In the 8 days that Genisys has been playing in China, it has already equaled the total box office earnings for the movie in the US. And with 72% of its gross coming from foreign markets ($320.1 million and counting), it looks like Genisys is finally turning a profit and has now surpassed Terminator: Salvation in earnings and looks to do the same shortly with Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Which means that Arnie may be back after all, for more time-travel cyborg shenanigans.
