What do you get when you add Star Lord, a huge ass new Indominus rex and $150 million budget? Well a movie that breaks numerous box office records and makes over $1.65 billion dollars! Indeed Jurassic World was a box office smash hit that many didn’t see coming. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie as did Kervyn, so hearing that it is part of a trilogy has me giddy with excitement!

In a recent podcast director Colin Trevorrow spewed lots of information on the next movie that he is currently calling Jurassic World 2, though that is likely to change down the line. Talking about the first movie in the trilogy Trevorrow said it was meant to be about the marketing and commercialization of the dinosaurs, something I touched on in my review too – that would certainly explain the abundance of product placement shots peppered thought the film. Of course this is not a new thing, the first Jurassic Park was also about that. However, the next movie is moving away from this and more into the territory of how humans and dinosaurs can coexist.

We looked at it as a trilogy from the very beginning. We designed the whole thing that way. And, honestly, the whole trilogy is articulated in Jurassic Park. Jurassic World is all based on Ian Malcom’s quote: ‘you stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could and before you knew what you had, you’d packaged it and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox and now you want to sell it.’ That, to me, is Jurassic World. That’s why I had all the product placement, that’s what it was.

And that’s why its exciting the movie did well. I had a beginning, a middle and an end and it was designed this way. So now we get to play that out.

Ahh hahaha ,ahh hahah

Indeed it did very well. Of course we could say that Jurassic World was a bit of a re-boot/sequel to the first movie (thankfully ignoring that ones that came after) so duplicating the merchandise theme is understandable. One thing all the movies have had in common is the whole ‘run for your lives! We’re stuck on an island! Gahh!’. Add squish noises. That won’t be the case with the next movie according to Trevorrow:

We made [Jurassic World] with the fans very much in mind. And I’m not going to forget that, but we’ve seen a lot of ‘dinosaurs chasing people around on an island’ movies. And I think you guys and the general audience are going to be down to explore where else we can go

[Chris Pratt’s] Owen is going to be in it, [Bryce Dallas Howard’s] Claire is in it and neither are going to be in the same place we left them in the first movie. And even though Claire is the one who evolves the most over the trilogy, it’s her story that mirrors this changing world. Owen has shit to deal with. They’ve both opened Pandora’s Box in Jurassic World and both of them are responsible for different elements of it.

And I think the way these characters are connected to these circumstances of what’s happening, it’s different than previous films. It’s not ‘let’s manufacture a way to get them somewhere’, they’re embedded into it now in a way that us storytellers are able to keep them involved without it feeling contrived.

Yes! Master Star Lord Chris Pratt will be back! Not that we had any doubt. When asked whether he’s signed on to do any more the now much-loved actor said he’s signed on for thirty or something… Oh if only that were true. Sadly one person who won’t be reprising their original role is that of Colin Trevorrow. He won’t be directing the second as he is already signed on to direct Star Wars: Episode 9. He will be producing and writing it though.

Expect Jurassic World 2 to attack the world 22 June, 2018.
