Batman may have the Joker, the Avengers may have Loki and Captain Hero has Scroto, but only Spider-Man has the Sinister Six. A mixtape of his greatest villains, the Sinister Six have routinely harassed the wallcrawler over the years, using strength in numbers to dominate as a force to be reckoned with.

And that’s a force which almost made it to the big screen, before things went pear-shaped over at Sony and Spidey returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a deal which benefited both parties.

Drew Goddard was the man tapped to helm that film which would have focused on the Spidey villains, a film which he called “the giant, epic Spider-Man movie of my dreams.”

While the project could one day be revived if Sony sees fit, it’s pretty much dead in the water right now.  But according to Goddard, the plan was for a movie that wouldn’t be so beholden to continuity, as he explained to io9:

My vision of that movie was a summer annual. So you didn’t have to worry about continuity. It was just, ‘We take Peter, put him on an adventure, we put him back in his life.’ I intentionally wanted a movie that didn’t have to worry about mythology and continuity.

It was important to me to make a movie that could stand on its own. So the good news is, you know, [laughs], it slots in very well to any plan anybody ever wants. We just need to let a couple years go by, I think.

That actually sounds like a great idea! It also sounds like an impossible idea, as Hollywood has a hard-on for shared universes, and throwing a half-dozen villains at a bankable hero without any lingering threads for sequels would have most likely being laughed out of the producer’s office.

And that’s a shame. Comic book annuals are usually fun diversions, a story told in one comic book act that usually ends without any massive ramifications to the lead character. A good inspiration, but one that would have never worked in the current film industry framework of today.
