Anomalisa Header

Anomalisa is the upcoming comedy-drama from Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Being John Malkovich) that stars David Thewlis (Naked, The Theory of Everything) as an ordinary man making his way through an ordinary life doing ordinary things… until he finds a possible way out.

The official plot synopsis is as follows:

Michael Stone [David Thewliss], husband, father and respected author of “How May I Help You Help Them?” is a man crippled by the mundanity of his life. On a business trip to Cincinnati, where he’s scheduled to speak at a convention of customer service professionals, he checks into the Fregoli Hotel.

There, he is amazed to discover a possible escape from his desperation in the form of an unassuming Akron baked goods sales rep, Lisa [Jennifer Jason Leigh], who may or may not be the love of his life.

That was… not what I was expecting. The juxtaposition of an incredibly human story with animated characters is a novel approach that really seems to work very well, emphasising both the humanity and the unreality of the situation. The excellent voice work by David Thewlis is what sells the trailer, as he maintains an engaging, thoughtful and matter-of-fact , yet also world-weary, tone throughout.  How can something sound so real but look so surreal at the same time?

The movie has received critical praise following its screenings at various film festivals across the world, even winning the Grand Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival, and it’s something I’m definitely going to keep an eye out for – how about you?

Anomalisa will have a limited US release on 30 December, and be rolled out across the world (no local date yet) over the following months. It’s directed by Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson, from a story by Kaufman, and stars David Thewliss, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Tom Noonan (as everyone else).
