What’s in a name? A Prometheus sequel by any other name is still just a Prometheus sequel, right? Well, I certainly hope so because either director Ridley Scott’s memory is going (hey, the man is 77!), or he’s going through some kind of identity crisis.

Just recently we heard that the upcoming sequel to not-an-Alien-prequel Prometheus was going to be titled Alien: Paradise Lost – in other words, most definitely tied into the Alien franchise after all despite Scott’s initial claims to the contrary. Scott even explained that once we saw the film, we would understand how the title – which is the same as that of an epic poem by John Milton – relates to the story. Or maybe not.

During a recent press junket for Scott’s latest film The Martian, the director spoke about how it was due to the Prometheus‘ sequel’s lengthy development that he was able to tackle the smash hit Matt Damon led sci-fi thriller. During the conversion (via Cinema Blend), Scott seemingly dropped the nugget that the sequel now has a new name.

“I was going to be doing what will be called ‘Alien: Covenant,’ which starts shooting next February, and we were struggling then with the screenplay there and then there was a phone call, somebody saying, ‘Listen, we’ve got this thing which is completely written called ‘Martian,’ and I said, ‘Huh.’ And I sped read it in an hour and by mid-afternoon, I talked to Fox and said, ‘I need to talk to ‘Drew [Goddard]…’”

So is Alien: Paradise Lost now Alien: Covenant, and does that perhaps imply some shift in the narrative? Another possibility could be that Scott is just getting this Prometheus sequel confused with another Prometheus sequel. The director previously stated that he developing a number of follow-up films, so Alien: Covenant could in fact just be one of the later movies and Scott got the name wrong.

Whatever the case, it seems quite clear that the Prometheus sequels will definitely be tying the first film directly into the Alien mythos. You know, exactly what they didn’t want to do in the first place.
