Well so much for those rumours that Warner Bros’ lineup of DC Comics was in trouble. Rumours that stated that WB apparently weren’t all too happy with the early response to the upcoming Batman v Superman and were considering pulling ye ol’ switcheroo and delaying Justice League in favour Ben Affleck’s solo Batman movie. But as has been revealed to EW by WB and director Zack Snyder, Justice League is in fact starting production on 11 April as the studio has officially given the superhero team-up movie the greenlight.

Justice League – Part 1 will start shooting at Leavesden studios in southeast England, just two weeks after Batman v Superman hits theatres. Wonder Woman is also currently shooting over in the UK, so it looks like the DC Cinematic Universe heroes are going to have their fill of tea and cucumber sandwiches for a while.

WB have been trying to bring a Justice League movie to the screen for nearly a decade now, and finally got the ball rolling on the necessary shared universe with 2007’s Man of Steel which Snyder also directed. The filmmaker spoke to EW about how good it feels to finally reach this moment.

“The idea that we could begin to boot up a Justice League concept was a cool thing. It was a little bit of an ‘about time’ moment, and I don’t blame [the studio] for feeling that way, because it’s a long time coming. But I do feel like it’s a little bit of a creative hurdle. It seems like an easy thing to do at first glance, the idea that, ‘Oh, we just get the rest of the superheroes in there.’ But you have to [establish] a world where they can exist.”

And that world building task really falls to Batman v Superman – which will certainly have the running time real estate to introduce this new cinematic universe as it was revealed yesterday that it will have a 2hr 31 min running time making it the second longest comic book movie ever (The Dark Knight Rises still holds the crown with 2 hr 45 min). And EW have now confirmed that besides for the titular Dark Knight and Man of Steel, as well as Wonder Woman – all respectively played by Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot – the movie will also feature cameo appearances by Cyborg (Ray Fisher), the Flash (Ezra Miller) and Aquaman (Jason Momoa),.

And while tweeting out a pic of himself with the latter Momoa in one of the pre-production locations, Snyder may just have revealed our first look at the Flash costume to be worn by Miller (who has no connection to the version of the Flash played by Grant Gustin in the popular CW TV series). It’s very small and not that detailed, but there are two things that can clearly be seen: It’s proper red just like the comics, and not the dark red/maroon of Gustin’s costume, and it’s also shiny. Like, very shiny. I guess the glossiness helps with aerodynamics.

Also in the pic, we can make out what appears to be concept art for Mera, queen of Atlantis, who is reported be played in Justice League and the Aquaman solo movie by Amber Heard. There also appears to be several Atlantean styled costumes – including Momoa’s Aquaman suit which we’ve seen before – as well as another which some people are speculating is just one emerald paint job away from being Green Lantern’s suit. Judge for yourself.

We should have a clearer picture of this once Batman v Superman drops on 25 March, as most of these characters are supposed to have cameos in that movie. You can expect those cameos to evolve into full-blown movies very soon though, as Snyder explains that “The studio really wants us to try and pace it up, as far as —now we have an idea where we’re going.” Well, I sure as hell hope they do have an idea though!

Justice League – Part 1 is scheduled for release on November 17, 2017.

  1. That header pic would have been way more badass if Batman only had his fits drawn.
