StarWarsRogueOne

Rules are made to be broken, right? Which is why, despite my deep-seated physical revulsion at the practice of teaser trailers for trailers, I’m actually kicking off today’s news with a teaser trailer for a trailer. And the reason for my flouting of my own morals can be explained and justified with two simple words: Star Wars.

In a surprising move in the early hours of this morning, Disney/Lucasfilm revealed that the first trailer for their first Star Wars spinoff film, Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One, would not be debuting at next month’s Star Wars Day (May the 4th) or ahead of Captain America: Civil War, but will instead be revealed on Good Morning America tomorrow (actually later today, because I apparently can’t work out time zone differences).

And to get us hyped, they have released a teaser trailer, which definitely puts the emphasis on the teaser part as it reveals a brand new type of Stormtrooper!

Well, damn. The last such a short video involving a person dressed in black armour and leather got me that excited was… well, sorry, but this is a PG-13 site, so I will have to leave that anecdote there.

As for Star Wars: Rogue Oneof course one of the reasons for the excitement from fans like myself, is that the production has been under wraps for so long. All we know thus far is that the movie will be set before the events of A New Hope and focus on the group of rebels/mercenaries as they steal the Death Star plans that eventually ends up in Leia’s possession. No word yet on the “many Bothans” who “died to bring us this information”. Poor Bothans.

Felicity Jones leads the cast as one of these rebels, and she’s joined by Diego Luna, Donnie Yen, Forest Whittaker, Riz Ahmed, Jiang Wen and Alan Tudyk (who plays a motion-captured CG character. It is believed that Ben Mendelsohn is playing the film’s villain, while Mads Mikkelsen has been cast in some mysterious role. It has also been widely rumoured that Darth Vader will be resurrected on-screen for the movie and will be playing a part of the story.

Despite the possible inclusion of the asthmatic Lord of the Sith though, Gareth Edwards has previously revealed that there will be no lightsaber-wielding Jedi to be found here (seeing as they’re all supposed to be either hiding or dead in this time period). Rogue One is also supposed to be more of a realistic and gritty war film instead of the high adventure fantasy/sci-fi we’ve been used to from the franchise.

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy spoke about this in her statement with the trailer announcement.

“Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe. It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know. Gareth is such an innovative director and I’m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he’s selected for ‘Rogue One.’”

And we’ll hopefully have had our first proper look at all of that by this time tomorrow, so check back then!

Star Wars: Rogue One is scheduled for release on December 16, 2016.
