D’ya like dags?! Well, I hope you at least like stolen diamonds, bare knuckle fights, sweet English gangsters and the world’s greatest getaway drivers, because a TV series adaptation of Guy Ritchie’s British crime-comedy masterpiece Snatch is in the works.
Variety is reporting that Crackle, Sony’s new online streaming service, has placed a 10-episode order for a new one-hour drama based on the critically acclaimed 2000 ensemble heist film which originally starred Jason Statham, Stephen Graham, Brad Pitt, Alan Ford, Vinnie Jones, Dennis Farina, Rade Šerbedžija and Benicio Del Toro.
Don’t expect to see any of those names attached to this series though, as it is reportedly taking a page out of the book of FX’s recent Fargo TV series adaptation in that it will be “carrying the spirit of the setting in the original feature film while “creating a new world.””
This new world – and its respective characters – is “inspired by a real-life gold bullion heist in London, [and] will center on a group of twenty-something, up-and-coming hustlers who stumble upon a truck load of stolen gold bullion and are suddenly thrust into the high-stakes world of organized crime. The hoods must quickly learn to navigate London’s underworld in encounters with rogue cops, gypsy fighters, international mobsters and local villains descend.”
There’s no mention in the report of Ritchie’s involvement in the series, and it will be interesting to see if this show can capture the magic of the original movie without him. Snatch is in my opinion the greatest thing that Ritchie has ever done, and it will be an extremely tall order to once again get so perfectly right that balance of kinetically edited action, wacky (and sometimes absurd) larger than life characters, infinitely quotable dialogue and just plain coolness without him.
Crackle have not revealed any release dates or casting info for the show, but I will definitely be keeping a close eye on this one. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go see a man about a caravan.
