We have been inundated with comic book movies over the past few years and that trend is not going to stop as 20th Century Fox looks to try and find another potential hit franchise, this time aimed at younger audiences in the form of Marvel’s New Mutants. Personally, I am loving all the comic book love in the movies, especially as most of the time they are of a really high quality (last year’s Fantastic Four did not happen, it is all just a nightmare). I do have my concerns though that we might be getting too many of them and that the market may be growing tired of them. However, marketing them for different audiences may help and The New Mutants created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod back in 1982, follows a group of teenage mutants as heroes in training.

The director for the project was previously announced as Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars), but the questions always remained as to which characters from the comic book series would they look to bring into the film. The New Mutants features a diverse set of characters and it was always going to be difficult to try and bring them all into a movie at the same time, so they were always going to need to be somewhat selective with their lineup.

And we may now know which mutants Boone has selected as he posted some images on Instragram revealing the following characters: Magik, sister of Colossus and a powerful sorceress capable of teleporting; Wolfsbane, who can change into a Lycanthrope at will; Dani Moonstar aka Cheyenne/Mirage, who can visualize other’s thoughts, especially their fears; Cannonball, who can thrust himself and fly with an energy propulsion; Sunspot, who can absorb and channel solar radiation to both fly and create energy blasts; and Warlock,a techno-organic being capable of changing size and shapes. It also appears as if the dragon Lockheed’s tail is in one of the images, Lockheed being the alien-dragon companion of Kitty Pryde in the source material. Whether that means one or bot of these characters will appears – also remains to be seen.

At present, no castings for the project have been announced, but now that we at least know which characters they’re thinking of bringing in, we can start the speculations for who might be best for each role. As the New Mutants requires a largely teen cast – don’t be surprised if they go for relative unknowns to fill these characters and perhaps bring in some cameos from the X-Men franchise to bolster the cast list.

Are you excited for New Mutants been adapted to film or are you getting a little sick of Hollywood’s reliance on comic books to keep their balance sheets looking healthy?
