It's easy to get lost in this new trailer and poster for STAR TREK BEYOND

Look, the previous trailer for Star Trek Beyond was just not a good one. Using a horribly tonally incorrect music score and editing, it made the movie feel like it had completely lost what little Trek-iness this rebooted universe still had left. Coming from the directing hands of Justin Lin, it looked like the franchise was jumping the shark Fast & Furious-ly.

Luckily, somebody over at Paramount realized what a boneheaded piece of marketing that was, and thus we have a brand new poster and trailer which is a huge improvement. Hardcore old school Trekkies shouldn’t get TOO excited though, as this third film appears to still follow the template laid down by JJ Abrams’ initial 2009 reboot, so the ratio of explosive blockbuster action to contemplative sci-fi ponderings is still way more skewed in the former’s favour, but it does bring back a bit of that feeling of hope, exploration, and out there alien menaces that Star Trek does so well. Of course it always helps that Idris Elba is the out there alien menace. And it looks like he’s bringing on the apocalypse instead of cancelling it this time around.

Check out the trailer below.

“Star Trek Beyond,” the highly anticipated next installment in the globally popular Star Trek franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry and reintroduced by J.J. Abrams in 2009, returns with director Justin Lin (“The Fast and the Furious” franchise) at the helm of this epic voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her intrepid crew. In “Beyond,” the Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.

Star Trek Beyond sees the return of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and John Cho, while Kingsman‘s Sofia Boutella and The Raid‘s Joe Taslim have also joined the cast. It is scheduled for release internationally on 22 July, but unfortunately we’re going to have wait another month to beam up as it only opens in SA on 26 August 2016.

  1. I only saw the 1st trailer now and I think they should’ve opened with this one and then at a later stage released the other one.
