It’s been a while since we last heard anything about the sequel to the entertaining 2013 action-thriller Jack Reacher, with Tom Cruise reprising his role as the titular Jack Reacher.

The sequel, based off the 18th novel featuring the character ‘Never Go Back’ by author Lee Child, will presumably – given that we don’t actually have an official plot synopsis yet – see Reacher returning to his former military base to visit an old friend, Susan Turner. Upon arrival he finds not only has she been arrested, but he’s also the prime suspect in a 16 year-old murder. And then he punches his way to innocence because – let’s be honest – while the novels might be fun, they’re not exactly complex.

However seeing is believing as the first pair of stills from the movie have arrived courtesy of People (and via JoBlo), showing Reacher and Turner not being fun at a party and Reacher getting into trouble as always:

I think it’ll be obvious after seeing the movie that no, you should never go back. It’s why I don’t go to my high school reunion, there might still be an outstanding detention for participating in an underground gambling ring and laundering matchsticks.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is due for release in the US on 21 October. Directed by Edward Zwick, it stars Tom Cruise, Cobie Smulders, Robert Knepper and Aldis Hodge.

No matter how much I enjoyed the first film (a lot) and no matter how good this is, I’ll still be bummed with the casting of Tom Cruise as Reacher – he’s just too damn small to fill Reacher’s shoes (literally). I always kind of hoped Idris Elba would get the part, or just anyone who is at least 6 foot really. Joe Manganiello wouldn’t have been a bad choice either.
