Horror movie sequels at best are often cheap and poor cash-ins of their counterparts and most end up painfully dull and remarkably unfrightening. The problem with the whole formula for horror movies is that they rely on building fear and shocking their audiences and horror sequels too often tend to just do the same thing the original did, often by a less talented director and the whole thing just doesn’t work anymore. It’s something we keep saying, but the industry does anyway because the film are relatively cheap to make (fake blood is way cheaper than computer visuals or explosions) and still reasonably profitable at the box office.

What makes this next horror sequel unique however is that it is not a sequel of a popular or good horror film, but a sequel of a movie, Ouija, that was already terrible to begin with. Needless to say, my hopes are low for this one. This time Mike Flanagan (Hush, Oculus) will be stepping into the director’s chair and attempting to do a better take at the franchise this time, which is certainly a tough ask.

This new film, will take us back to the mid-60s and jettisons any real connection to the first flick other than Ouija game board that must be a part of the story. The story follows a family who has been scamming others  by claiming to have some connection to the spirit world, performing seances for rubes, only to be faced with something truly evil they’ve only been pretending exists. It sounds potentially better than the first, but Ouija: Origins Of Evil still appears to be clutching at narrative straws nonetheless.

The film certainly tries its best to fit the 60s setting and hits all the typical possession traits of a film, though the effects look laughable at best. It has potential and based on the trailer could be better than the first, which would actually be a pretty satisfying reversal of the usual trend.

The official synopsis is below:

In 1965 Los Angeles, a widowed mother and her two daughters add a new stunt to bolster their séance scam business and unwittingly invite authentic evil into their home.  When the youngest daughter is overtaken by the merciless spirit, this small family confronts unthinkable fears to save her and send her possessor back to the other side.
