While the animated fare produced this year has largely been average, there have been three massive hits that have been released in 2016 thus far: Zootropolis, Finding Dory and The Secret Life of Pets. The latter has yet to be released here, but was incredibly well received in the US and other markets. You could argue for Angry Birds in this category if you would like, but most of us are trying to forget the movie ever existed in the first place.

What these three all have in common though, is that they all featured anthropomorphic animals (look it up in a dictionary, Kervyn). Which makes it quite surprising that Storks has not been getting more attention than it has been, considering it seems to be aimed directly at the same market.

What makes this even more interesting is that the film actually has a stellar voice cast and strong production team behind it. The film stars the funny Andy Samberg alongside Katie Crown(Cartoon Network’s Clarence), Kelsey Grammer, Jennifer Aniston, Ty Burrell, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, and Danny Trejo. The directors Nicholas Stoller (Neighbors) and Doug Sweetland of the Oscar-nominated short film Presto are also very capable, so you would think that it is a sure-fire hit.

And it may still be, but a part of me is wondering that if the reason it is not getting a lot of attention is maybe because it secretly isn’t very good. I’m hoping I am wrong though. After all, Zootropolis (which was released as Zootopia in the US) sort of took audiences by surprise and it was incredible, so I’m hoping this is another movie which could be the same, especially as the trailer looks like a lot of fun.

The film is, as you guessed it, about Storks. And what they deliver. But, this time they are no longer going to be delivering babies (don’t tell Trevor, he still think this is where babies come from…), but other things of even greater value to some of us – our technology. After all, if anything needs to delivered with care and precision, it’s the latest technological gadget, am I right? So when a Stork is now asked to deliver a baby, its a new challenge all over again, especially when glass is involved.

Storks is due for release on September 23 in the US.

You can read the full plot synopsis below:

Storks deliver babies…or at least they used to. Now they deliver packages for a global internet retail giant. Junior, the company’s top delivery stork, is about to be promoted when he accidentally activates the Baby Making Machine, producing an adorable, and wholly unauthorized, baby girl. Desperate to deliver this bundle of trouble before the boss gets wise, Junior and his friend Tulip, the only human on Stork Mountain, race to make their first-ever baby drop – in a wild and revealing journey that could make more than one family whole and restore the storks’ true mission in the world.
