There was never much of a doubt that Daisy Ridley would land some big film roles after her appearance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While starring in a Star Wars movie has proved to not be the best career move for some up and coming actors, there was always something different about the way she fitted into her character that you knew she was destined for bigger things.

Many thought (myself included) that those bigger things would include a starring role in the reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise. However, that role went to Alicia Vikander. So, it was just a matter of figuring out where that post-Star Wars big role would come from. Yes, she will be acting in Hamlet re-imagining Ophelia opposite Naomi Watts as well as the war drama The Lost Wife, but those are not likely to be big films – at least from a box office perspective.

But now we may just have the news about what that actual big role could be, as reports from The Hollywood Reporter claim the actress has landed the lead role in the adaptation of Patrick Ness’ acclaimed YA trilogy Chaos Walking.

The trilogy takes place in a world where all living creatures can hear one another’s thoughts in a stream of images, words and sounds called Noise, a side effect from a germ outbreak that killed off all females. So almost just like today’s world then, as most of us still don’t know goes on in a woman’s mind… I digress. And joke. Badly. Anyway, the two main characters of the trilogy are Todd Hewitt and Viola Eade, so presumably Ridley has the Viola role, and it will be interesting to see who they cast opposite her.

The film is due to be directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow) and based on a script by Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Being John Malkovich). Those are two very different styles, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Liman alters the script to more suit his tastes. At this point, they are only adapting the first book of the trilogy, The Knife of Never Letting Go, and if it’s a success, I have no doubt the studio will order the entire trilogy to be adapted to film.

The film is still in early pre-production, so expect a lot to change before we get closer to actual development, Below is a full synopsis of the first book in the Chaos Walking trilogy, as published on Amazon:

Todd Hewitt is the only boy in a town of men. Ever since the settlers were infected with the Noise germ, Todd can hear everything the men think, and they hear everything he thinks. Todd is just a month away from becoming a man, but in the midst of the cacophony, he knows that the town is hiding something from him — something so awful Todd is forced to flee with only his dog, whose simple, loyal voice he hears too. With hostile men from the town in pursuit, the two stumble upon a strange and eerily silent creature: a girl. Who is she? Why wasn’t she killed by the germ like all the females on New World? Propelled by Todd’s gritty narration, readers are in for a white-knuckle journey in which a boy on the cusp of manhood must unlearn everything he knows in order to figure out who he truly is.
