All female OCEAN'S EIGHT cast details emerge

This may be too late, but I hope Hollywood is not starting a trend here. Remakes have been a thing for a while now, but remakes where they swap the sex of the characters may just be the next fad. There was obviously a huge uproar from fans when Paul Feig decided to reboot the Ghostbusters franchise with an all female cast. And while the criticism is completely unjustifiable and I have no issues at all with women being cast in this role, I’m very wary of the typical Hollywood modus operandi of jumping on the bandwagon and turning this into a new thing. Which is something they are seemingly doing with the next Ocean’s movie.

The last trilogy of Oceans’s films – which are themselves a remake of the 1960s Frank Sinatra led film – were a massive hit for Warner Bros and it’s something they are keen to do again. This time however, the group of mastermind casino thieves will all be female characters. The new film, which will be produced by Ocean’s director Steven Soderbergh and will be directed by Gary Ross based off a script written by both, will be called Ocean’s Eight, because women can clearly do things better than men and don’t need as many to get the job done. Oh wait, I’m cheering for the wrong team here… Why isn’t Nick writing this article?

The good news though, is that as unnecessary as I think the idea is, they are definitely putting together a solid cast for this one. Part of what made Soderbergh’s Ocean’s film such a success was the great cast and chemistry between the actors and they are certainly looking to keep that approach going with this film. While casting is not complete yet, Ross has already revealed a list of top stars they have secured for the film (revealed through Deadline). Now Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett were previously confirmed for the film, but they are also apparently close to securing  Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling and Awkwafina (no, I don’t know that last name either).

Now, those of you who can count, will realise that its only seven names, so there is also still room for one more female to close out the main cast – outside of the obligatory antagonist or love interests they will probably throw in.

That is certainly quite a cast, not only in acting talent, but also in range and appeal to different demographics. And while these names are not officially confirmed, if they can secure these stars I would certainly be a little more excited for the film. With the same team behind it as the earlier George Clooney led films, I have no doubt this film will probably have a similar feel to it, but hopefully also something unique.

I don’t like movies being made for the sake of meeting a trend and I certainly hope this is not the case. What do you make of the potential cast for Ocean’s Eight?

Nice cast. The Oceans movies wore thin for me, but this has me interested again. I hope Sandra Bullock is playing George Clooney/Frank Sinatra’s role. She’s perfect for it.
