Many are excited for the new Resident Evil movie. Only it’s the live-action one starring Milla Jovovich. Not many are probably aware that there is also a CG Resident Evil movie releasing next year too. And that it’s not even the first one, but third fully CG film in the series, following 2008’s Resident Evil: Degeneration and Resident Evil: Damnation in 2012.

Now it’s understandable considering that the CG movies have not exactly been blockbusters or necessarily targeted as such (at least not outside of Japan). However, if you are a fan of the game series, you should definitely be doing your best to try and watch them as these films are more closely related to the events of the games and provide great background to the events that take place between the different entries in the franchise.

Resident Evil: Vendetta, as this latest installment is titled, is set after the events of Resident Evil 6 but before the events of the upcoming Resident Evil 7 Biohazard. So, again, if you are really into the games, you will want to watch this one to get the full experience. The film will also feature popular characters from the series including Leon Kennedy, Chris Redfield, and Rebecca Chambers.

The film is due for release next year in the Japanese spring (around March/April) and is being directed by Takanori Tsujimoto off a script written by Makoto Fukami. These names probably don’t mean much to you and they drew a blank from me as well. What is important though is that the series is produced directly by Hiroyuki Kobayashi, the creator of the game series and Takashi Shimizu, the creator of The Grudge. So, the film is in good hands and likely to be a lot more focused on being a true horror than its action packed live action counter-part.

Now, I’ll be honest, I haven’t been a huge fan of the live-action Resident Evil films, but this looks a lot more like its up my alley.

Now my Japanese is a bit like some of our writer’s love lives, non-existent, and so I don’t have the full idea of everything that is going on in the trailer, but apart from the awful operatic score, this looks like it could be good. The CG animation looks quite detailed and a lot of effort has gone into the dark and eerie setting, which gives me hope it’s going to produce a lot of tension.

Are you a Resident Evil fan? Does this look like the type of film that would whet your appetite till the release of the next game?
