arrival

Now we know aliens have already landed on Earth (after all, how else can you explain Trevor and Nick’s behaviour?), however that doesn’t stop Hollywood making movies about the topic and taking a more sci-fi approach to it all. And while it’s a common subject in Hollywood movies, too many of these alien arrival films get it completely wrong and tend to leave more of a bad taste in people’s mouth than excitement. The upcoming film, Arrival, though is certainly pushing all the right buttons and has got me back to excited all over again.

The previous trailers have done a superb job in setting the basic plot and building the suspense, but haven’t revealed too much more about our extraterrestrial brethren and what we can expect. This final trailer (which is likely to be followed by numerous TV spots) plans to change all that and gives us a slight glimpse of the alien species.

And by glimpse, it is incredibly short (much like Nick) – and all we see is what looks like a hand, but is perhaps too impractical to be a hand, so your guess is as good as mine. The film appears to balance thriller suspense with typical marine stupidity, but at least appears to be giving us a much smarter take on the concept of an alien invasion. If this were to happen in real life though, my money is on the Nigerians being the first to infiltrate the aliens and not the Americans – because by the time the Americans finally get their army and scientists already, the Nigerians would’ve broken in, made a deal and be selling the alien tech for profit found a solution. When will we finally get a realistic alien arrival movie?

Arrival stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, and Michael Stuhlbarg and is due to hit cinemas on November 11. The film is directed by Denis Villeneuve who also helmed the brilliant Prisoners and Sicario, so I have high expectations that this film will not be your straightforward alien arrival sci-fi movie.

The official synopsis of the film is below:

When mysterious spacecraft touch down across the globe, an elite team – lead by expert linguist Louise Banks – are brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers – and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.
